    Very short WTF story

    So this happened to my CW Betty the other day, late in the afternoon:

    Betty: Thank you calling [newspaper], Betty speaking, how can I help you?
    Woman caller: Yes, I have a question, can you help me?
    Betty: I'll try, what is your question?
    Woman caller, in the most offended, snippy tone ever: Well, THANK YOU very much! (hangs up)

    All I can think is she was offended by Betty saying she would "try" to help her. Is that such a horrible thing to say?? We often get questions that we can't answer because it's not our dept. (sometimes not even anything the newspaper can deal with at all), but we'll always listen to the question and try to help if possible. Honestly some people just exist to be offended!

    reminds me of the time a customer got real pissed because I said something should work instead of it will definitely work because I'm not psychic.
    Interviewer: What is your greatest weakness?
    Me: I expect competence from my coworkers.

      She could have had an audience, decided that she wanted to have a "reason" to call you and make herself look "tough" in front of them or something...thus, it made zero difference what CW's response was, the result would have been the same.

      ex:

      Betty: I'll be glad to help you with anything at all!
      Woman caller: Well, THANK YOU very much! (hangs up)

      or:

      Betty: Sure thing! Even better, you've just won our millionth-customer prize of ten thousand dollars!
      Woman caller: Well, THANK YOU very much! (hangs up)

      ...You get the idea. She wanted something to bitch about, even if there was nothing to bitch about.

        Sarcasm dear, sarcasm. I’m well aware that dealing with civilians in any capacity will skin your faith in humanity alive, then pickle anything that remains so as to watch it shrivel up into an immortal husk thus reminding you of how dead inside you now are.

          Whenever anyone asks me if I can help, I always say I'll try to, because I know my limitations and because I know some people would take me saying "yes" as literal truth and try to rip me a new one if I couldn't deliver. It's basic CYA101.
