Worst credit card scam attempt ever?

So this happened this past week at the library I do security at. A guy in his early 20's walks up to the security desk and asked this in a serious tone





SC: Hi do you guys have a Lost and Found?

Me: Yes we do.


SC: Do you guys have any ID in your lost and found?

Me: Yes, what did you lose?


SC: Do you have any credit cards I could grab and i'll take them to the police building for you.

Me: No....
SC: Okay


He then walked away. He then appeared to go to the staff desk and request a library card. So I suspect he wanted to use one of the credit cards as a fake ID. I wouldn't full on claim he was one of the usual gang members who hangs around but it wouldn't surprise me. I'm just curious has this worked in the past for him? He didn't seem to be joking in anyway and was serious in his statement. We have people who fish for stuff all the time but at least most people give a bit more detail in the hopes the guard will open the lost in found without requesting more detail so they can try and claim something as theirs.

Sure, just wait there and I'll hand over a credit card ... oh hey, would you like this iPhone while I'm at it? And this wallet with $50 in it? So you can take the whole lot to the cops at once?

While I suspect this dude knows his way to and from the police building very well, I still can't believe he actually thought this was worth a try.

Ya know what's REALLY depressing? When you encounter potential criminal masterminds like this, they have to be operating under the impression that you are even less intelligent than than they are O_O

I bet he's one of those types who dropped out of school and when confronted, will insist that he is "smarter than you".

As always, the weakest link in any security system is the human element. It's far easier to convince a human to allow access than it is to convince an electronic system.
This being said, I'm sad to say that with that level of ... influence, he will still manage to get into places he shouldn't be allowed.

Buzzard: I can go one further. I used to work at a small Italian joint where we regularly just never turned much of a profit, and the word was that money was "somehow" always missing from the till, no matter who was on it. Note that:


- It was the only till, so it was shared
- The owner always confirmed the counts (by counting it himself)
- The owner usually cashed his wife's paychecks for her out of our tills


I think you see where I'm going with this...


Anyhoo, one week, the owner finally got a set of security cameras installed, so as to "narrow down" who could have been doing all of this stealing. The owner decided where all of the cameras were to be placed, and exactly where they were pointed. Guess what part of the store was the ONE area with no camera coverage whatsoever...? >_>

Oh yeah. I've had one similar. Gas station owner who only paid minimum wage, but expected star employees. Oh, and 'everyone' was stealing from him. yeah. Between him and his wife, I lost a few items here and there. Gee, just because it's out of the product displays, out of customer sight, not with normal product, with someone's NAME on it, WITH a receipt... yes, this belongs out for sale.

I hated shift changes. Every last effing widget had to be counted by both inbound and outbound cashiers. Plus lottery tickets, cigs, etc. Meanwhile, how many more effing widgets can we stuff back here for sale (and counting)?

Kind of like those rocket scientists who submit a handwritten W-2, supposedly from a Fortune 500 company.
It's not the transparent fraud attempt that's so galling to me....it's the credit they give our intelligence. You're doublethink of the day: us tax pros are skilled enough to complete a tax form, but we can't spot a phony document

You'll be happy to know that when I accidentally left my debit card at a library book sale I had to show a picture ID to get it back.

When my debit card fell out of my pocket at a fast-food place, I was lucky enough that someone turned it in. The manager asked me questions about info on the card and did examine my driver's license before she gave me the card back. I was favorably impressed with the amount of care she put into making sure I was the rightful owner of that card before handing it over.
