  • Dumb and dumber: A tale from the beach

While we were at the beach, we stopped in at the Boardwalk Mall a few times, usually to play video games. There were also games where you could win tickets, including one of those machines with the quarters on the moving platforms, where you drop in a quarter hoping that it will push some of the quarters over the edge. If you play one of these in any kind of gambling establishment, you get the quarters it pushes out, but this one just gives you tickets which you can redeem for prizes. It's a tease, more than anything. You see all these quarters that are hanging right over the edge, and you're so sure that a bunch of them will drop if you put your quarter in, but more often than not, nothing happens.

This one guy got the bright idea to shake the thing. Several quarters did drop, but it also set off an alarm. Not a smart thing to do, when the owner is sitting at a counter that is maybe ten steps away from the machine. The manager took the tickets away from the guy, reset the alarm, and then told the guy to leave.

Right after that, this other guy, who had watched the whole scene unfold, did the same thing, and also got kicked out.

    So, to recap:

Dumb: Shaking the machine, right in front of the owner, and getting kicked out

Dumber: Doing the exact same thing you just saw someone else get kicked out for.
    Sometimes life is altered.
Break from the ropes your hands are tied.
    Uneasy with confrontation.
Won't turn out right. Can't turn out right

Well, I can tell you from experience that it's nothing unusual. No, it was. They didn't protest "It wasn't me!"

I hear if you stamp your feet on the floor you can get those things to pay off without setting off the alarm. But it still baffles the mind that people think techincal problems can be solved by shaking something violently

Possibly. They had those in the casino (a real casino that paid out money) on the cruise ship I was on five years ago. A couple times I was standing next to it, and hadn't even put in any money, and a few of them dropped for no apparent reason. I figured the ship probably hit a big wave.
