  • SC's and No regard for Safety!!!!

OK, this is a few in one... so here goes....

Saturday, we had a drain line break at work for the roof drains.... 24 inch, and due to a heavy storm, around 1,000 gallons of water come in.... NOT Cool in a computer store.... We Close, Clean up and move stuff in the dark, as we cut power for safety... We get lights back a couple hours later, and with the gate CLOSED... have a customer come in and wander around... mind you there are cords and fans everywhere as we try to dry out the store... and then complain when told that we are not open!!! Ok... theres at least one in every bunch right???

So, Sunday we are closed for cleanup and restoration.... Monday, (today) we re-open but with certain aisles barricaded.... does that stop people from entering the aisles??/ NOPE!!! Water is still puddled on the floor, and nothing is merchandised, but they insist on entering these areas... then complain when you say the area is closed.... sooo... I make some flourescent orange signs stating, this area closed, Please see an associate for assistance, plaster these on the barricades and carts.... does that work??? NOPE! SC's still move the cart with the signs out of the way, then claim "I didnt see a sign" what the fuck do you think that orange paper on the cart was for???? they get angry when informed that it is a hazardous area, please leave and I will get your product for you... does that faze them?? Nope... still whine, bitch, piss and moan.... they would rather risk injury than allow me to get your 20 dollar modem.... if I fall, workers comp covers me... if they fall, due to signs being clearly posted, and barricades, sorry bub, your on your own, we are not liable... anyway... i guess thats about all...

Where I work, my job has kept my reflexes sharp. People want to go through coned off areas but we can't let them because it causes safety problems and they bitch and moan about it. There is a spot on the outbound sheet called south vip chains. The job is to make sure people don't cut through the chains and it is exhausting. People will move barrels, cones, I even witnessed a guy jump a traffic island in his H2 hummer. Some people have even requested not to be put down there, one coworker got punched in the face, and another got bumped by a car. I've almost been hit, but I've been called a racist, almost got into a fight with a guy, (He was about to throw the first punch and a coworker witnessed it happening.) and I've been called every name in the book. I still work that spot if I can because I'm allowed to yell at SC's and not get into trouble for it.

At a parking lot for an arena, during the winter I work at one place for a NBA team that I won't reveal because I don't want to lose my job in case somebody finds my rants on here. I direct traffic and occasioanly cashier at the entrances; most of the time I'm stuck in the VIP lots which means I get some jerks. During the summer, I work at two other venues that are owned by the same company, I prefer the other two because everyone is laidback, where the basketball arena people act business and think that they can what they want. I have plenty of good stories for this site to hear.

Many, many years ago when I was young and needed the money, I worked as a camp counselor for a few summers.

I'll never forget the day the kids came back from camp. For whatever reason, the parents didn't actually go to the camp to pick their kids up; the kids all got loaded onto big coach buses and transported to a community center in (I'm guessing) the nearest big town. Parents could then go and pick up their children.

The lot is more or less divided into two sections; we have the area where the buses are parked and the campers are waiting, and then we have the area where the parents park so they can wait for their kids without running over anybody. Once a parent's identity is established, the corresponding campers are escorted over from the first lot.

It's pretty well thought-out. We have a LOT of signs, plus half a dozen people directing traffic.

Guess what the rest of us get to do? We all form a human barrier to physically prevent parents from driving their SUVs into the lot where all the children are waiting around.

Aside from nasty glares and a few words, we have to deal with no less than 6 psychotic parents who have no problems running over a bunch of 18-year-olds standing in between them and their children.

One parent actually lectures me (*me*, singled out of everybody standing there) on why I shouldn't stand in front of moving cars (dur, so that's what I've been doing wrong all these years...).

We had a door in the side of the building that was leftover from when the store was a restaurant that came in from the parking lot. There was a big sign on it outside that said "Caution! Step down". The reason was that people would walk in, be dazzled by the sunlight, and in that few seconds before their eyes adjusted, fall off the single step that led down into the store. Well, nobody ever stepped down and enough people fell down we sealed the door off. Apparently, nobody in town can read.

Okay, so to keep people from going over there and trying to get out that door, we had a series of large, stand up advertisements in front of it. some potted palms around that. Behind them, was a coral of velvet rope cordoning off the area around the step. Then on the door itself was a large sign saying "not an exit." In fact, I'm amazed anyone could even see the door back there under all the crap.

We would stand and watch people squeeze past the signs, squeeze past the plants, climb over the velvet rope, ignore the sign, and start pulling on the door. I kid you not. This 10 feet away from the front door, too.

SC's Hey, this door won't open.
Me: Really? You found a door back there behind all that stuff? Maybe it's nailed shut.

I had a lady do somthing similar: Someone busted open 2 2liters of coke (dunno how) and we roped off the are and cleaned it up. When the bagger cleaning the mess was leaving the handle on the mop bucket got caught on a shelf and spilled. We again roped it off. It wasn't blocking the isle (back speedway). This woman comes by and pushes the baracade aside, I aske her to go around as politely as I could, she responded with somthing along the lines of I won't fall... bull shit.. she did. She slipped and fell in the middle of old mop water and coke. She got upset and started to cry, I paged the idiot Store Manager who gave her money for new clothes , the yelled at the bagger for having the baracade out of the way (she claims the baracade was where she moved it to when she came up and didn't see the big brown-greenish mess on the white floor.

              Stupid bitch.

They never have regards for safety.. we tell customers we see not to let their kids dangle from carts and climb on them like damned apes but, does that stop them? Never. My coworker and I were out pushing carts and we're watching this kid hangin off a cart like Jack from Titanic and the father pushing it must have hit a bump or the kid was just retarded and fell off head first onto the ground and started screaming, he wasn't bleeding or anything but the dad just like pulled him to his feet and said something like "you idiot, get in the car".

I also can't count the number of old people that would kill people without ever even knowing in the parking lot... they drive up the wrong way of an aisle and try to park and take 20 minutes to park because they are facing the wrong way of a diagonal parking spot. They also NEVER look where they are going. If we don't stop with our 30 cart long cart pusher, we will get killed out there because no one ever stops (not just old people). Customers who haven't even BOUGHT anything trying to park think they own the lot and just zip right on by us not even looking at the huge train of carts heading straight for their gargantuan SUV.

My coworker and I were pushing carts into the corral and as we were pulling out into the road to get to it with 30 carts in tow, we got half way out before a car driven by an elderly man started speeding up thinking he could beat us, and he's about 10 feet away and we realize he won't stop so we both throw ourselves into the carts to stop them and he zooms around goin 25 easy mumbling "what the fuck" (we could see his lips). We almost die and HE says what the fuck?
"It's a never ending job, huh?"
                "Not when I'm around."

It's not just old people who do that. I've seen plenty of soccer moms and high-school kids who cut across the parking lot at high speeds...and then either hit someone (in the proper aisles), or plow into the light poles.

As a matter of fact there's yet another report of an old man plowing through a crowd of people. He was 85 years old and claims his gas pedal got stuck. 28 people were injured but were treated and released.

one of the stores I worked in tried EVERYTHING to keep people out of closed aisles, chains (stepped over) ladders (moved aside) wooden trilas even

they finally ended up getting in floor to ceiling NETS to keep them out, they were clipped on to the top and bottom of the aisle endcaps made of tarping with a metre by metre sign on it

we caught a customer trying to crawl underneath them.....ugh stay out people!

That reminds me of the place i worked at when i was 16. I worked in the newsagents part and there was a supermarket attached. Due to trading laws at the time the supermarket had restricted hours but the newsagent part could stay open late.

Now if someone wanted ONE item from the supermarket we'd usually be happy to run and get it from them. But soooooo many people would just try to wander round by themselves into the darkened supermarket where the remaining cashiers were all alone counting their tills out, there was access to booze, cigarettes and the back of the store....er....no WAY!

We put a row of trolleys across the first aisle and ran a thick metal chain through them and attached it to the shelving at either side. It mostly worked but as it was only ten foot from the newsagents counter we could yell at them if they tried to get through. I liked the yelling.
Will you $*&£ing mind the $*&£ing doors!

Hmmm. That chick might be trying to scam you, SHE moved aside the safety barricades, and then got money for new clothes, due to her own action. Of course , she was able to blame an employee for her actions, and get the employee in trouble. If she stepped into the middle of a roped of area then she takes a risk and she has cotributory negligence. Of course, friggin' managers, will always believe the damn customer in this sort of situation. Grrr....

I don't know if this is the same story....
It was a few months after 9-11, November I think. There is a retirement community close by called The Villages (this place is HUGE!) An old man had a seizure or a heart attack or a brain fart or something; ended up plowing thru a large group of people, injuring quite a few. What did the crowd do? Did they help the old man, check to see if he was okay? No. They dragged him out of the car and beat him to a bloody pulp. They thought he was a terrorist attacking their downtown retirement community!

dude! One of my first jobs at the young age of 15 was directing traffic for an arena! GOOD TIMES!! The only saving grace for that job was I was allowed to see any event taking place for free provided I was working that evening. I am much older now and the arena is closed so, I can say it was the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio. The Cleveland Cavaliers used to play there before they built the Gund Arena downtown next to the Jake. (Indians Baseball field) I directed traffic for several years, then my last year there I ushered for awhile.
