  • Independence Day Losers (ranty)

OK seriously, who the hell decides that they're going to go to Staples on the 4th of July? Don't they have anything better to do?

I could not believe how many people came in today. Between them and the Load I was putting away, and an ongoing ink overstock project, I was flat out for my entire shift.

And then these people weren't buying anything! I think we had more returns than sales for much of the day. Seriously. You're returning a 12 sheet shredder ont he 4th of July? WHY?!

Oh, and everyone who was actually prepared to buy something didn;t because I wouldn't give them a deal. At least half a dozen seperate parties asked me "What's the 4th of July discount?" Not "Is there a discount?" or "Are there any specials today?: They assumed there WAS a discount and wanted to know what it was. I lost two digicam sales because they were outraged that they couldn't get a special deal.

Then there was the moron who was all set to buy a $250 camera. Then he asked me where the $15 memory cards in the flyer were. I showed him, except the card he wanted was $25, not $15. It was still steeply discounted (normaly $45). The flyer quite clearly listed the price of this card as $25. He walked out. So he could spend $265, but not $275?

And then the crownign glory was the frigtard who tried to get me to give him a $300 color laser printer for $80. I'll explain.

He had a photocopy of the current pricing info for that model at Office Depot. It was the same base price, with a $50 instant savings, and a $150 mail in rebate. Final cost $99.99. Not a bad deal. Except that our price match policy stipulates that we can NEVER match a competitor MIR. This is not some hidden secret thing. It's on the full policy which is posted for all to see. We can only match the price you would pay at the register over there. So I could match the $50 instant savings, but not the rebate. Had I done this he'd have gotten 110% of the difference, thus lowering his price to $79.99.

    A scammer. For certain.

SC: I do not understand. You have the policy [of price matching] but you're not honoring it.

Me: Sir, the policy specifically states that I can not match a rebate. I can only match their point of sale price.

SC: It says right here that it's $99.99!

    Me: After a $150 REBATE! I can't match that.

SC: Well, can you give me the same mail in rebate?

Me: That's their rebate sir, not ours. I have no ability to make up a new rebate.

So he and his two cohorts left in a huff. I am astonished that I did not have to get the manager on duty involved. The MOD was equally astonished after I related the incident to her.

Thank God I don't work anywhere that has to be open on holidays anymore.

Several 4th of Julys, several Thanksgivings and Christmas Eves, One Christmas Day, Several new years eves and new years days....I was stuck behind a counter, missing out family events, missing out on food, missing out......just to serve CUSTOMERS who had no business shopping on those days for anything!

        yeah, forget that.

But the bigwigs get to celebrate with the day off!

From what I understood, they're even open on Christmas if they're a Super Center. Yet another reason I wanted to get out of there so badly before our Wal-Mart turned into a Super Center.

The same people who made my store open every day except Christmas. Can't have all those shoppers taking their money over to Wally World, you know. And I would say it was fairly busy.

At least we are only open until 5 or 6 on holidays, and I can take holidays off if I want. I'm saving mine for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

Us, too - the only holiday we're closed now is Christmas. The good thing is that they staff the holidays by volunteer. . . so I never volunteer!

Go ahead. Come tomorrow. Tomorrow is a regular day. Today isn't.

EDIT: Unless it is for business purposes, there is little at Staples that qualifies as a "need." Certinaly not the way oh....food, clothing, gasoline, etc are needs. My point (as I believe others here also think) is that we'd prefer not to have to work on a holiday, and when custoemrs actually come in - even though they aren't making us any money - that somehow justifies keeping the store open to the big wigs (who undoubtedly had the day off themselves).

The same people who go to movie theaters and video stores on the 4th of July. It's probably because holidays are the only weekdays these people have off. It's just something I guess you have to get used to in certain businesses. Granted, that doesn't make it any easier, but, that's the way it is.

Not that that excuses in any way holiday SCs.

I'm glad that when I go to stores I rarely need associate's help (other than 'can you get this item that is locked for me?) so even if I shopped today, most associates wouldn't have noticed I was there, excelt the cashier.

That's the same way i feel. When i go shopping (whether it's a holiday or not) i usually don't seek out help any more than i absolutely have to.

It's like when i go into a store right when it opens (or within a few minutes of opening) because, i admit, it drives me nuts when people are coming into the store in droves, approximately 30 seconds after we open. I know i'm not buying anything or returning anything, so basically i've got no reason whatsoever to bug the employees who most likely just got there themselves and really don't feel like dealing with customers yet.

That is how I do it. I know what I want, and I will go look for it. IF I do need an employees help, I will ask. That goes specially for car dealerships.any I hate it, when a car salesman comes up as soon, as I get out of the car. No offense to any car salespeople.

There is a special - the fact that you're open on a national holiday. Isn't that enough?
