You are right it shouldn't be such a big deal . . .
    Unfortunatly it has become one.

Students can get in trouble for not having the correct supplies.

I do remember that the standard red, blue, green, yellow, orange folders were needed every year. Maybe that was the reason Mom went ahead and bought them at the start of summer so that when the school year started we already had the required colors.

does anyone else see the delightful circle going on here . . .we are doing this to teach your children to be prepared and organized . . .which if you are running around like a chicken with its head cut off and yelling at clerks who don't control it apparently aren't orgainzed.

Thank the Gods I got out of school before this nonsense got started. I used to color-code myself, but I would buck hard if it was actually required of me to do so. Especially after I discovered that my mom could get notebooks from the dollar store. They had more paper in them and the only drawback was that they were ugly neon colors. Whatever, I wasn't looking at the front much anyway.

If they try to do that kind of micromanaging with my kids, I will call the Hounds of Hell on them.

Back in my day we had a wildly radical solution for distinguishing which folders and notebooks were for which classes. We called it "writing the name of the subject on the folder or notebook."
        Same here.

Of course, when I was HS, every teacher INSISTED that we have a seperate folder and notebook for each class.

Guess how long THAT lasted? Middle of the second week, at the latest (and school always seemed to start on a Thursday {?} or something).

None of my schools (that I can remember well, which means from third grade on) ever did that color coding stuff.

I started every school year from at least 6th grade with a brand new Trapper Keeper which I used for about the first month, and then ended up just using for storage for the classes that needed it for the rest of the year, plus as a great place to keep my pens, mechanical pencils, and extra leads.

            *Insert Anguished Scream Here*

Days like these remind me why I hate Back to School so much. After I finished helping with the truck I had to request and fill school supplies for the rest of my shift. While doing so I encountered the following douchebags:

            1. Husband and his wife come in looking for the notebooks we had on sale for 10 cents apiece:

W: (standing next to a big sign we put up stating the notebooks were sold out and rainchecks were available at the service desk) Where are the notebooks you had on sale for 10 cents?

I explained we were all sold out, due to the vendor not being able to send us our full order.

H: You're surprised they don't have them in stock? They pull this all the time! Advertise something real cheap and then not have it in stock so you have to buy something more expensive! I bet the Attorney General would like to hear about this!

I'm quite sure he would. He enjoys a good laugh just as much as anybody else.

            2. Another lady comes looking for the notebooks and again I tell her we are sold out. I mention she can get a raincheck at the service desk and we'll call her when they come in.

L: But I need them right now!

The private schools don't start for another month, and the public schools don't open until after Labor Day (state law). So I fail to see how you not being able to get your notebooks right this minute rises to the level of an "emergency"

            3. A couple of country bumpkins making one of their probably infrequent trips to the big city, along with their three kids. They had maybe 8 teeth between them all.

H: Whar' dese tablets you gots on sale for tin cints?

Once again: we are out of stock, vendor didn't get us all the units we ordered, you can get a raincheck at the service desk now go away kthnxbai.

H: Das not fair! We needs dem tablets! I oughta go over to Wal-Mart!

Yes, please go do your shopping at Wal-Mart, along with your fellow failures of humanity.

Gaah. I wish the schools were back in session already!

              This weekend is gonna suck...

Today we started a 2-day sale with doorbusters tonight and tomorrow morning.

One of the doorbusters for tonight is a metal futon frame priced at least 50% below the regular price. Throw in the cheapest mattresses we have and you can have a complete futon for under 100 bucks.

Last night we got in our supply for the sale: a whopping 5 futon frames. 3 of them were to be set aside for rainchecks, so we called the people and now have to wait 24 hours for them to pick them up before we can make them available to other customers. The 2 remaining ones were sold within 2 hours of us opening.

Boy I'd hate to be the people working salesfloor tonight. There are going to be some very unhappy people.

Ok, your distribution/requisitioners are just assholes.

Why the hell would you get something fairly useful at less than half price and then only have less than a half dozen on hand?

I pity your sales people tonight.

                  No kidding.

Another FUBAR. We had doorbusters from 7 am to noon today. Two of the items featured were a 4-foot folding camping table and a screen tent thingy.

We had all of 6 tables available for sale. According to the store manager, we were the only store to have fewer than 12 tables available for the sale. I don't know how many of the screen tents we had, but they were gone pretty early into the sale.

Manager had to drive half an hour to another store to pick up more of the tables, but he had to wait to do that until the other manager came in at noon. Meanwhile we had to tell customers we'd have more tables this afternoon, but that was too late for many people. If you're making your weekly trip into town from the country you don't want to have to wait around or make a second trip.

Their are several reasons as to why specific color folders are required for specific subjects.

One of which is for the teacher. If every student has a specific color folder for that class and they are required to have the folder every day - the teacher can glance around the room and see a sea of folders in the same general color.

It also part of trying to teach basic orginization habits to students. If Math is always red - then it is always easy to find their Math folder.

(sorry I was once an education major)

This is also from the same group of people say that grading must be done in purple because red is too 'violent'. Once again Political Correctness is ruining our world. Soon they'll require elbow/knee pads and helmets for recess. Then when lower income kids can't purchase those things they'll cancel recess and lunch altogether...I think homeschooling or private schools are looking better all the time.

I was a private school kid, and I do endorse it in areas like mine, where the public schools often suck. But homeschooling, now, with that you have to be careful. It can be done well; I've seen it work out. But most - and I mean most of the homeschooled people I have met - do not turn out very well-adjusted in the interpersonal and general social sense. There is value in the socialization that occurs in a school environment, and it takes a lot of effort to reproduce that in a homeschool environment. It's a shame and a mess when that doesn't happen.

So is fuckton metric or standard?
Well, SolidSharkey has a review of Oregon Trail on his site, and he uses the phrase a "metric fuckton" which equals something like 4.8 regular fuckloads. Now whether that's an actual measurement or not, I dunno.

Sorry you are actually wrong in saying this about my post.

Their really were studies done about early on orginzational training and trying to make time in the classroom for the teacher to teach along with meeting stupid state mandates and such.

You may have a large group of people who are against red ink for grading . . .I haven't even met a handful of people that felt that way . . .the ones that do typically (as in not all but majority of) homeschool and include a large amount of religion to the material the kids learn.

Homeschool and Private school are valid options for education. The main thing is for the children of today to be taught.

This post just reminded me of a song...

"I'm a 21st century digital boy... I don't know how to read, but I got a lotta toys!"

Seriously, I just used to write the subject name on each of my books...we used brown bags as book covers and whatever the hell notebooks and folders we wanted.

Any teacher that wanted us to use a specific folder for their work provided us with one (and there weren't many) . AND our schools provided us with homework planners and a special school folder to encourage organization.
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK

Meh, I was always organized in my own way. Being forced to have a certain color for a certain folder was not my style. I already learned numbers by associating them with colors, allowing me to remember long sequences of numbers as sequences of colors, and the alphabet was fast on its way, as I associated many letters with colors too. Words as well. Science I always thought should be a bright blue or green, while math should be a neutral tone.

                              Why?

I still couldn't tell you, it just worked for me regardless if it worked for anyone else.

Like the time I failed a "test" in art class becuase I drew a fictional character that "god did not create". Man, pivate school ftl.
