Now I can understand asking for your bags to be packed light if you need them to be, and that's fine I don't mind, but there are some items that if you have traouble lifting, that you should not be buying.
These would include:
24 packs of waterbottles
12 packs of soda cans
etc...
Basically, if you can get it off the shelf, it shouldn't be a problem, today however, it was apparently.
A customer came up to my register and loaded her items onto the belt and asked me to pack lightly, no problems here until I get to her gallon of milk, putting in a bag by itself...

Me: your's truly
SC: little miss can't carry a gallon of milk

SC: *straining* ooh, this is to heavy
Me: I'm sorry but the only thing in there is your gallon of milk
SC: can you lighten this bag for me?
Me: I could drink some of it.

I wanted to be polite, I wanted to say something else, but I just couldn't help it. I would have drank some too, but she didn't have any cookies for me.

Pagan, she didn't get the milk down from the shelf. She stood in front of the milk section and waited until a big, strong man came up and then she turned on all her feminine charm & batting her eyes up at him, sidled up and asked if he could "Pwease get down the very heavy milk for her and put it her cart? Pwease?"

That used to bug me. You'd get these people who wanted YOU to get their heavy items off the cart to scan & they would tell you that it's too heavy for them to lift. Well, if that's true then how the hell did you put it in your cart & how are you gonna put it in your car? I mean, C'mon! we're not stupid!

Well, they could have asked an employee for help, and a lot of stores will help you load your car if you ask for help, so I can understand that. But to expect the bagger to "lighten" a bag that only has one item to begin with? All I can say to that is .

When I go to Sam's with my mom we usually don't have a problem getting heavy stuff from the shelf to the cart or the cart to the car, since we're not moving it more than a few feet at a time. And they can usually scan it in the cart if necessary. But when we get home we let my dad bring them into the house. I'll even leave stuff in the car (assuming it's non-perishable) if he's not home and let him get it later if I have to. I've learned the hard way to always test the weight of an item before trying to lift it or carry it any distance...

The "bag my groceries lightly" thing used to bug me too. I always wanted to tell them, "Then buy lighter groceries!"

I did actually quite enjoy it when I had a bandage on my arm for that very reason. It was doctors orders I couldn't lift any heavy weights for six weeks.

Bah! That would still only work if you removed some milk first, because if you simply put helium in, the container stays the same volume, but you're actually adding mass, meaning you're increasing the density, making it less bouyant in air, which is how helium makes objects lighter, by making them less dense than the general atmosphere. So you'd have to lighten it by removing milk, then force the air out using helium for there to be any appriciable difference.

Heehee . . . reminds me of the time I had to keep my left arm in a sling for a week and a half (dr. suspected tendonitis, or possible pinched nerve) and I ended up helping out for a short spell on a register (lunchtime rush and I was busy trying to take care of the pricing on the salesfloor.)

Fortunately, nobody complained or whined that I was "too lazy" to lift those bags f dog food or 12 pack drinks . . . or that gallon of milk.

Looking back on that, I think that was an advantage of working in a smaller neighborhood store . . . we knew the customers better and they knew us.
