I can't believe how many people came in today, read various signs posted around the front desk area, and then decided to do the opposite of the signs.
One of the signs is the "No Pets Allowed" sign. Its on the wall behind me, I am short, so its easy to see. I see the person looking at it, and mouthing "No Pets Allowed", its clear they are reading this. I waste my time checking them in (for the most part, got there name, phone number, address). I get to the payment part. Dude starts reaching for his wallet and says "I have a dog, thats okay right?". I had to reply, "Sorry, no pets allowed". As he is walking out he says "I guess the sign is true". WHAT!?! How the hell are you going to read "No Pets Allowed" and somehow assume that dogs are acceptable? (and before anyone says it, seeing eye dogs/dogs for the handicap are acceptable always).
Another genius enters. I greet him, he says nothing, he is preoccupied with another one of our signs at the front desk, this one explains that you must be over 21 to get a room and have positive identification to show upon check in (sorry, no anonymous guests here). It takes him a few minutes to read a couple lines of text, but he wasn't reading, he was thinking, you'll see why. So he proceeds to look into getting a room. Everything is good, and I start checking him in. Same deal as above, I get to the payment part, he hands me a credit card, and I ask for an ID. I didn't ask him because he was reading that sign, I asked because the card was so messed up, I was barely able to make out the name on the front, and the area on the back to sign, was missing (it was all rubbed off, I doubt the card would have swiped). He has no ID, nothing, and when I say nothing, I mean nothing else with his name on it (like another card, or membership somewhere, nothing). I had to refuse, and not surprisingly, he just takes his card and leaves, which let me know that he knew there was a good chance he wasn't getting a room here.
And lastly, and issue that occurs almost daily. Man enters, and starts to read yet another sign (don't you just love those signs posted up everywhere to tell people crap that they'd argue about later if the sign wasn't there?). This sign tells customers that a VALID major credit card is required for deposit. A lot of times, people will read it and either whip out the credit card/debit card or say "I got a card, it aint got no money on it though". I guess people do not realize that a credit/debit card with NO money on it is literally just a hunk of worthless plastic. This man reads it, and continues to check in. I get to the point for payment, and he says "I want to pay cash". Great, I also need a credit card for the deposit, and I tell him that. "But I got cash, you don't take cash?". I try to explain the deposit thing, but its not going to work, he's too ignorant. "Why can't I just pay cash?". I'm done, I'm not going to bother with him on this, so I insist on the card again and he leaves.
The last one is the most annoying since it happens the most. Some people understand about the deposit, and sometimes even ask right when the walk in the door if we need a credit card from them. But the people that do not understand are the ones that don't get that they are not purchasing a product, they are renting a product pretty much. When you buy something at the store, and pay cash, like a DVD player, its yours, you take it home and do whatever the hell you want to it. When you rent a room, you are to sleep in the bed, watch TV, take a shower, hence, use the room. It is NOT your room, you are NOT allowed to decorate it by exploding a soda can all over the place, or drawing a picture on the wallpaper in pen, or cutting half of the drapes for god knows what reason (yes, this happened). The deposit is for when you do decide that it is okay to act dumb and do something in the room you are not supposed to do. We need to be compensated for that, and a deposit is how its done. If you do not understand this, then you are probably the type of ass that would vandalize our room, therefore, get lost, I don't want you here.
The no smoking sign hasn't been ignored today, lets see when someone decides to read the sign and do the opposite.
