  • Is it Sucky if you tell somone to take the discount off?

Ok so I know most people are going to think I am well crazy but aafter reading some of the post on here I try REALLY hard not to be a sucky customer.

The other day my husband and I went out to dinner I was starving cause I hadn't eaten all day. We we got to the restraunt the waitress was really nice and on top of everything. I ordered a BLT and when she brought it our I eat just over a quater of the sandwhich with out even really tasting it. A couple bites later I noticed the bacon didn't taste quite right I opened up the other half of the BLT to see that all the bacon was burned. When the waitess came up to see if everything was ok I showed her the bacon and she offered to have the cooks make me a new sandwich

We where getting ready to go to a move and it was going to start soon so I politely told her no it was ok and asked for my check. When she brought me my check they had removed my meal from the bill and only had my husbands. I felt bad because I had eaten about half the sandwhich so I asked the waitress if I could please at least pay for half of the meal. She looked at me like a was crazy gave a giggle and walked away. So anyways she didn't charge me for half the meal but I gave her a tip the amount of half the meal. Since I wasnt trying to be sucky and I was really planning on paying for the whole meal.

So I am not sure if she thought I was sucky for complaining about the sandwhich after I eat half or just crazy for asking to be charged from at least half the meal when she took off the entire thing.

No, you weren't sucky. You were anti-sucky. If anything, you were being TOO nice.

Here's my philosophy, as a server: Your food was not what you wanted/ordered/wasn't done right. Therefore, you won't pay for it. We are not going to charge you for bad food/wrong food.

Now, the above is in relation to nice people who don't eat the whole thing and then bitch about it. This is genuine people with genuine issues. Carbonized bacon on a BLT? That qualifies. Had I been the server, there would be no chance of that BLT being on the bill.

I think your server did a good job, and you were overly nice, and you both rock. But you really shouldn't get so worried about it. Most decent restaurants and decent servers want your experience to be great, and if it isn't, if the food is wrong or bad, they will either fix it or remove it from bill.

And that is how it should be, if you ask me.

I had a similar case in town here. I was recommended to go to a family oriented Pizza / Steak house from a colleague. I had high hopes for this restaurant as they advertise the "Best Caesar Salad in Town" and they have had a strong reputation in the city for years. I have never in my life complained about my food at a restaurant, unless you count the various skillets I threw at the cooks at Denny's (I don't, since I have yet to see actual "food" served to me there) so I was almost heartbroken that I had to complain about my steak to my server.

The problems started not long after we ordered. it took 40 minutes for us to get drinks, and 5 minutes after that, we get our salads. Now I love garlic, but nothing could have prepared me for the intensity of it in my salad. I had to send that back, and just get a house salad. I told the server that it wasn't exactly what I had in mind, and if the majority of people like it, who am I to argue.

After an hour and 20 minutes from the time we walked in, our food finally arrived. My cut of steak was terrible. the amount of fat and gristle was apalling, not to mention it was severely over done. I'm an Alberta Boy originally, so very particular about my steak. I like medium RARE, but I was brought what I could only describe as leather. It was cold, the fries were stale, and just not worth even half the $22 it cost, in my opinion.

I thought, "Ok, shit happens, no big deal." However, I saw 3 more tables do the exact same thing, so I suspected a MAJOR problem in the kitchen. After talking to a couple of regulars, they had enlightened me to the fact that the owner was losing his passion for the business, and the city is facing a labour shortage so it had been going downhill for a while now.

I won't say that I felt sorry for my server, but I felt that it was unfair that she should have to bear the brunt of the customer's dissatisfaction, as she was exceptional. They more than happily removed my steak meal from the bill, and I went home hungry, but I still made sure to tip the server $20, and to let her know that I loved her service. I only found the food questionable. It was hardest on me though I think, because I absolutely HATE wasting food.

I also had an issue with a restaurant near me. I went there a few weeks ago and ordered a bacon cheeseburger, and started eating it without noticing it had no bacon. I figured that since it was mostly gone before I noticed, no big deal, and the extra charge for bacon was pretty small, so whatever. (I was charged for the bacon, but like I said, no big deal).

Yesterday, I go back to the same restaurant, different server, order same thing. She reads it back correctly, so I know she heard me properly. She does not bring out the food, and whoever did bring it out brought me a plain cheeseburger. Absolutely nothing beyond burger, cheese, and bun. So I munched on fries while I waited for her to come over, and let her know. I also made sure I let her know that I didn't think it was her fault, and that it was probably a mix up in the kitchen. That stuff happens. But boy, that sucked having to wait to eat while everyone else was enjoying their food because they screwed up. They didn't discount, but no biggie because they were able to fix it.

Another time I had ordered nachos with my bf, and they were kind of stale. We mentioned it to the server only because we didn't want them serving those chips to others, and the manager tried to get us a new plate of them, but since they were mostly gone, we didn't care. They took them off the bill for us though, which was super nice and not really necessary (I mean, we cleared the plate of the chips)... but hey, who am I to complain about that? I'll always go back to that restaurant just because they take great care of their patrons. And they have the best nachos ever.

There is one chain restaurant in my town that I refuse to darken their door ever again: Chili's.
On my last two visits: One steak, ordered medium rare, received well done (NOT done well!) and nothing was done when I requested it to be re-cooked. One Bacon Swiss cheeseburger--received no bacon, extra cheese. I reported it to the server, who then took it from me and served it to another customer--AFTER I had fingered through it looking for the bacon! You better believe that one was escalated to the manager immediately! But nothing was done about it. I watched him (the other customer) eat the burger. No, I won't be going back.

A certain King has a new sandwich around here. The first word in the name is "Bacon" Twice I ordered it sans the weird sauce, add ketchup. Twice it was given to me sans bacon, but with ketchup and no weird sauce.

First time, "No big deal, new sandwich, people screw up. It was still tasty."

Second time, "Okay... There's an issue here..."

Third time, I went inside to order instead of through the drivethrough, and spoke with the manager, who happened to be working the register. Let her know, kindly, that the last couple of times I'd gotten the sandwich, there had been no bacon. This had been one night a week for two weeks, this was the night of the third week. Since I go so late, it's usually just her up front, and I'm a regular anyway, so she recognized me without any trouble. I make a joke about it being a "Bacon X" and it's just kind of funny the two I ordered didn't have any bacon. I say, just wanted to let you know, and order something different (wasn't in the mood for beef, and the chicken, cheese, and mozarella sauce was tempting that night). I order it, and she says the price is half of what I usually paid.

She'd given me this new sandwich free, without me asking for it, just cause I'd missed out on bacon a couple of times. I said she didn't have to do that, she insisted, and I thanked her profusely. Was this a sucky thing for me to do?

It does seem that lately, food quality is dropping everywhere except local places... I only ever eat at local places or drive-throughs that have a good track record for this reason. I've boycotted at least half the restaurants in town (along with the rest of my family) because they're chains that have crapped on us more than once.

When I just started working at the local ARBY's I was surprised at the waste, but I understand the reasons for taking care now. If the wrong sandwich leaves the counter (just leaves) even if the customer just looked at it and sees it is the wrong one by the wrapper it goes into food garbage bin.

With the crazies out there today you can't trust any food that been out of your sight for even a second. To recycle food that has be handled by a customer! That is just plain insane!

just think i probably would have left a big tip for burned bacon, nothing better than burned bacon ehehe yum.

i once got a free meal because they took too long, i went up to get my food, and they said it was free. i asked why and they said it took too long for them to make it. i was confused about this, i protested saying that i did not mind waiting and i would like to pay for it but they insisted that i take my meal for free. i felt horrible about it, i didnt even ask them for anything. i was even more bummed that they were out of buisness a few months later. it was the only place around that i could get weisswurst it was a real nice german resturant. i did understand how it could go out of buisness if they are just giving people free food cause it took too long. a nice thought but not a way to make money off your customers.

i still havent been able to find another good german resturant since that was about 6 years ago.

i had another instance of free food a few months ago, at our local chilis. we ordered our meal to go, and while we were waiting for them to finish makeing it another customer came in who was getting food for a family who was having a baby (all the family members in the waiting room ect) apparently the order was wrong and the declined the food, even after the waitress offered to give them the food that was wrong free of charge. she looked at us sitting there and said please take this food its pretty much the same thing you ordered except for a few salads. so we took the food off her hands and gave her a nice tip with a huge thank you.

dont worry the food never actually went in to the other customers hands they just opened the containers and looked in side and saw it was wrong.

If you happen to be near Columbus, Ohio I can recommend Schmitt's in the German district. Melt-in-your mouth Bratwurst, great beer selection, and a one-pound creampuff that is the epitome of German pastry creation.
