  • Is it too much to ask to be allowed to leave on time?

I was fuming today cuz I was nearly half an hour late getting off my till. I had to buzz three times to ask them where my relief was before they finally dragged someone off the shop floor to get on my till. The second time I buzzed them, they said, "Your relief didn't turn up." To which I replied, "Then close my till." They didn't do a thing til I buzzed for the third time and told them, "Either close my till or find a relief cuz I'm not sitting here all day."

They'd be up in arms if I strolled in half an hour late to start, so why force me to work half an hour more? And yes, I did claim it back, but I don't see why I should work half an hour forced overtime. -.-

I understand your pain. If I am working the cigarette lane, I can't leave the cigs unattended. Which means, someone must replace me before I can leave. Luckily, all other registers can be left when it is my time to go.

When working the cig lane, I tend to become annoying, because I start a countdown. I see a CSM and I say, I leave in 15 minutes, will someone be here to replace me?" I get an answer, "Oh yeah, sure." uh-huh. Wash rinse, repeat. Finally I talk to someone who acts surprised that I have to leave (wait, really??), and they call someone over. I don't like acting sucky and annoying, asking every few minutes. But I find it's the only way I leave relatively on time. That's the only thing I hate about the cig line.

Yesterday the fuckstick who was supposed to be doing carryouts from about 11 to 3 didn't show up.

      Again!

This guy came from another store, he only works one day a week because of school (and I don't see why he couldn't work yesterday because nobody has school on Black Friday).

If he keeps this up, he won't be able to return to his old store.

Then they'd get pissed when you had overtime & would demand that you "cut it out" either by coming in later or taking a longer lunch. That crap used to happen every so often at Wally World.
& when it was time for me to go home, I didn't want to be there any longer than I had to be. I figured 9 hours was enough. They'd be short of people & asked me IF I wanted to stay longer & I always said NO. I'd get the meanest looks but I didn't care. They always acted like I should LOVE to be stuck behind the register for a few more hours.

Oh, that pisses me off to no end. Sorry the cashier who comes in after me didn't show up. I have to leave an hour ago. I have this...miserable thing, called a life.

I just LOVE it when they claim "I didn't know you were getting off at...." I do a lot like bainsidhe does, and remind them every few minutes that I NEED to get off the register, so I can GO HOME.

And not to play the children card, It IS important that I get off somewhat close to the time I'm scheduled, ya know, cause I have these people who want to be relieved from taking care of my kids! I can deal with 15-30 minutes over, so long as I have a time frame. Anything over that becomes a huge ass problem. You want me until 7? Then schedule me until 7, don't schedule me until 6 and then expect me to stay until 7, 7:30 or 8 o'clock. I need to get the fuck home.

I also noticed that my patience with the customers wears thin the longer I am on the register past my scheduled time. And I have little to begin with. I bet all of my customer complaints can be traced to being on the register after my shift should have ended.

            That's very true.

In my case, my irritation stemmed from the fact that I had to not only visit Personell after work, but also go round the supermarket afterwards (to buy pizza and butter) so when I finally left the store, it was at the exact time that I should have been home, and that always pisses me off.

Before Wrong Aid bought out Crooks drugstore, I was a supervisor on the night shift. My first two weeks into the job I got robbed at knife point and I spent the next hour explaining everything to the police and getting jumpy when someone entered the store.

That very morning, when everyone else had gone home, I was in the store for two full hours after my shift was supposed to end BY MYSELF becaue the supervisor who was supposed to be there at five didn't read the schedule correctly and came in two hours late.

When I worked at Ihop, I had a night one time when the entire third shift wait staff didn't show. It was eleven, I had been there since four with another girl. I had work the next day at nine at my other job, so I lost it when the manager told me to stay until someone came. I told him he could do it his damn self...luckily, someone did show up, and hour and a half late.
"I just read the schedule wrong, hyuck!"
Don't ya just wanna kill 'em?

Where I work, you just have a scheduled end time and that's supposed to be it. However, on the weekends, I've scheduled myself to end on a half hour instead of a whole hour. I've been there two months now, almost three, and that's my permanent schedule.

I still have to remind the idiots I get done at *:30 instead of *:00 Every. Damn. Week.

I can relate to the register woes though. When I was on nights, my shift was 11-7:30 usually. Half the time I was stuck there until 8 or 8:30 while the fucktrumpet morning bitch clocked in, got coffee from the bagel shop, and chatted with the morning FE manager. If she was late, same routine.

It sucked because I had one chance at a ride home. At 7:30. If I missed it, I had to walk 3 miles home, in the middle of winter with a bad ankle.

Hehehe.. This is where you need a child for an excuse.

"Hey, I HAVE to go. I have to pick up my child!"
It worked pretty well for me at Lowe's.

Other times, when it was my time to leave (I didn't work register) and I got all my crap done for the night, I would just punch out.
Yeah, the rest of the store looks like crap, but the paint department looked immaculate, and it's 10:00 at night. I have to open tomorrow. I'm not going to stick around and help them put crap away in another department.

So I clocked out and left. Never got into any trouble either.

I'm happy to report that at my store, if the person relieving you doesn't show up, you don't have to stay. You just punch out and go.

When I'm not on the register, I leave when I'm scheduled to leave. I finish up what I happen to be doing then, clean up the area and head back to clock out. I love that.

(And note to my co-workers, I do understand that it is the holidays, but guess what? You pull this shit when it isn't the holidays, so that excuse doesn't wash. I swear, today I'm just going to hibernate.)

i had one like this at my old job. If i couldnt i would just leave. if i could i would call my mom let her know i would be late so she would go to bed even though she wouldnt til i was home.
But one time it wasnt ok.
But they told me i had to stay cause they where short handed.
I said then start calling i got to go.
Nope no one can come in.
                          So i called the manager.
"Hi <manger> Im leaving right now. Im leaving you with One cashier for the dinner rush because you seem to thing that scheduling two people for the early afternoon shift was a a great idea. But i can not stay i have to pick up my little sister. So either call a cashier and get them in or call other stores and borrow one or get down here your self."
Manger- "Your sister is a big girl she can get herself home."
Me-"............ My sister is a big girl thats right. She is also bi polar, has a attachment issues, right now depressed if her attitude this morning is any indicator, has soical anxiety and if she wanted to could kill someone and get away with it she could because she not only has a history of manic psychosis but like me has been train with a gun, and martial arts. My sister needs to come home from work, take her meds, and go to work herself. I'm signing off now and leaving. Ill see you monday" <CLICK>
took off my apron, walked out, and didnt even look back at megan.
I never worked afternoons after that, only evenings or breakfast.
And they never faught me when i said i couldn't.

At least where I work the managers know that we have things to go do, and they will gladly cover the register if the other person doesn't show up (eg yesterday, I worked from 9-5, and the person who was supposed to do register from 5-9 never showed up, but the manager just told me to go and he would take care of it himself.) If I'm on register, that's how it will go, but if I'm not, they just tell us to leave at the time we are scheduled to get off, even if we are in the middle of a task.

I work at a hotel and there's only one desk clerk per shift. About 3/4 of the time, I am waiting for my relief to come in, sometimes up to an hour. The manager gets huffy too when I go into overtime. He thinks I am just staying extra to get overtime. NO WAY!!! When it's 7:00 AM, I am ready to go. I don't want to stay there any longer than I have to because traffic becomes heavy the later I leave. It becomes impossible to turn left out of the hotel after 7:15. I have to explain to him, every week, that the reason I am in overtime is because the person who was suppose to relieve me was late.
