Can I just put in a good word for emo kids and anime fans, please? We're not all complete idiots or psychotic zealots. I just wear the tight black pants cuz they make my legs look skinny. And I tend to smile at people. I'm a cheerful emo kid!

Well, when you have a very small package, you don't need a very big box to put it in.

I'm probably treading into dangerous territory here, but I don't understand where all of this hostility towards the "emo" scene is coming from. Sure, I suppose I understand the argument against SOME of them, but no more so than for any other group of people. These kinds of sweeping generalizations are, to me, like saying all blondes are dimwitted (to choose a less controversial example). For some, the extent of being "emo" is feeling as though they look good in a pair of tight pants. For others, it's a phsyical expression of genuine emotion. I don't see it as fair to say that people from upper-middle class upbringings can't feel angst. I'm a psych major, so I'm pretty sensitive to this stuff, but simply having money or a perceived "idyllic" upbringing certainly doesn't negate the ability to suffer from depression, but that's a whole different discussion in and of itself. My only point is that it's inappropriate to peg a whole group of people for the bad behavior of only a few of its members, so why is it okay to be so stereotypical here? Sure, some of them are only seeking attention or whathaveyou, but to constantly make fun of EVERYONE remotely tied to the scene isn't neccessary.

I'm really not trying to stir up any arguments, but the overwhelming distaste (to me, reading borderline hatred) against a certain group of people simply for how the express themselves through appearance is completely unfair.

The kids who were ripping into brand-new, unopened merchandise and who steal, however, are a COMPLETELY different story and fully deserve what's coming to them.
