  • Sir, there is no statute of limitations on stupid. (language)

We had an SC at the store today (who I gladly did not have to deal with) who the MOD simply referred to as a "fucking moron." The guy was trying to return a bunch of toner cartridges he purchased online over TWO YEARS AGO, without anything but the shipping invoice that did not list prices or method of payment. Not only did he insist on getting a FULL refund, but that we refund his company credit card. The whole thing was fishy as hell, though I know I never got the full story.

But the one thing that I remember vividly was him declaring to the MOD that the statute of limitations for returns requires us to take back stuff up to two years after purchase (conveniently, the amount of time it had been since he bought this toner).

This term, "statute of limitations." I do not think you know what it means. In fact, I know you do not. Statutes of Limitations place a time limit on when certain civil or criminal actions can be brought against someone. It has nothing at all to do with returning ancient toner we don't even sell anymore, YOU IDIOT.

Second, to the best of my knowledge, there is no law anywhere regarding retail return policies (the closet I can think of is the Lemon Law, but that doesn't apply here). As long as the policy is posted, it can be whatever we want it to be. If we say "all sales final NO MATTER WHAT" that's fine as long as it's posted.

Therefore, sir, you fail. YOu can take your toner and shove it where the sun don't shine for all I care, so long as you take it with you.

I think in the end we took only some of the cartridges back.

Man, the manager was MAD at that guy. I mean actually seething with rage. even the Box Art Nazi didn't get him this worked up.

You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I remember when Burlington Coat Factory only took returns for Store Credit...no refunds, no matter what. Only reason they changed that is because of customer complaints.

THAT'S the line I was looking for. Couldn't remember it exactly, so I just paraphrased it.

The guy was trying to return a bunch of toner cartridges he purchased online over TWO YEARS AGO...
We had one of those a week or so ago! Somebody bought three new HP ink cartridges for an old-style HP printer. Cartridge #45. A few days later, they returned said #45 cartridges for a full refund, but the packaging was very different from what I'm used to seeing. Instead of blue and white with green accents, it was a kind of yellow-orange and white with red accents. The packaging even proudly declared: "Now easier numbers! You don't have to look for #a56745 anymore. Just look for #45!"

I was suspicious. I looked at the packaging on our recently-delivered #45 inks. They were manufactured between April and October 2007. The returned inks had manufacture dates of November 2002. This person exchanged ancient ink cartridges for new ones and didn't pay a dime for it. We'll probably have to junk those out. Contrary to some customers' beliefs, inkjet ink does have a limited shelf life.

I pointed this out to management, and they told me to go ahead and sell the old stuff anyway.

If your management is like that, then please let me know where you work so I know not to shop there.

                That's borderline criminal.

The shelf life of most toners are listed as one or two years only. You would need to store them in a very cool (near freezing), dry and dark place to extend the life more.

Those toners will fail after only a few hundred prints.

In the future, when in doubt, refuse.
