  • Possibly the worst day ever (long rant)

Yesterday was a terrible day at work almost bad enough to make me quit.

I was in an accident last week (stupid drivers in snow storms) anyways I hurt my knee and now at the jobs I need to stand for extended periods of time or walk around I have to use crutches to keep the weight off my knee. So yesterday i was working the cash register, it's about the only thing I can do at my mall job. So there I am standing at the register on crutches and our POS (point of Sale) machine goes down, which means we need to call to authorize all purchases paid for by credit, debit, gift card, or check. Also if someone wanted to purchase a gift card we had to call and activate it over the phone. We only have 2 phones and 2 phone line at the registers and 4 cashiers working. And just my luck I am put on the register furthest from the phones.

Most people where really understanding and patient with me when I explained that I need to hobble over to the phone and authorize the purchase over the phone and it would take just a minute. And with gift card payments some people that only have 1 or 2 bucks on there card offered to use it at another date and pay cash. Of course not everyone was like that or it wouldn't have been my worst day ever.

A lady comes up and purchases $3.00 worth of stuff she has a $5.00 bill in her hand but hands me a gift card and tells me there is 0.50 cents on the gift card. I explained to her the situation with the POS and that I will need to wait my turn for the phone and it will take a couple minutes over the phone. Her reply was to tell me that there was 50 cents on the gift card and that she wanted to use it. So I hobble over wait for my turn on the phone authorize the card hobble back and put in the authorization code. Only to get yelled at for taking forever to apply the 50 cents.

I always try to point out the sales to people like buy 3 get 1 free if they are already buying 2 of the items by saying something like "These items are on our buy 3 get 1 free offer, if you buy 1 more you qualify for a free one" or "These are on the buy 3 get 1 free you have 3 here would you like to go pick your free 1?" A lot of people like the idea of free and when I offer to let them run a grab the free one while I start ringing up everything else they are more then willing to grab it. Then there where the asshats that could see I was on crutches but would insist that I go get there free one for them cause they didn't want to fight the crowd. There where 3 different sets of SC that complained to my manager because I told them to go get it instead of doing it myself. I even would apologize and tell them it would be quicker if they did it because of my crutches. On customer called me a "Damn cripple” I looked right at her and said "I am sorry, doI offend you in some way? I was in a car accident the other day I am in a lot of pain and anyone else would still be at home in bed, but I am here at work so I can pay for my kids christmas and if you don't like the fact I am on crutches go to the end of the line and wait in line again to get a different cashier!!"

Good for you. Regardless of the reason that you are on crutches, that was both rude & unacceptable.
I'm sorry, the person to whom you were speaking has been replaced by a recording. Please leave your message at the sound of the beep.

That sort of attitude is unacceptable even without the obvious crutches.... Seriously, I hope karma bites them in the ass and they mess up their knee and find themselves crippled. See whether or not they start wanting perhaps a little bit of consideration.

There's always that one asshole that will blame you for inconveniencing them when you're obviously hurt. My story last week of the woman being snide to me because I was "typing too slow" for her about an hour after I got out of the emergency room when I cut part of the finger off last week...geez people are just assholes sometimes. I bet the woman that mouthed off to you will hurt herself somehow, think twice about what she said.

Ugh. This reminds me of when one of the women at my work was pregnant, and VERY obviously so, and working cash. This was before she moved to greeter so she wouldn't have to do any lifting and bending.
A customer got snotty with her because she wouldn't, I'm sorry, COULDN'T, help lift a box that likely weighed 75Lbs.

I see people acting like this with one of the coordinators who is pregnant. She sometimes gets on cash because she gets bored doing light work in the office and one of these days I'm going to snap on someone who bitches at her for not lifting something.
She's five damn months pregnant! Give her a break!

call centers are even worse for that.... at least in retail most people can see what is wrong with you, you get sick in a call center and all the person knows is you don't sound as friendly as you should. I had one yesterday though (granted this would have happened in retail too), the guest complained that I wasn't being very helpful and I just snapped back, "that's because today I just plain don't care, because I saw my manager disable the verint system on my phone when I turned in my funeral leave request so I know none of my calls will be monitered. Normally I would offer to connect you to the person who may have been able to fix that, but considering I'm not in the helping mood today I'm going to tell you that nothing can be done, thank you calling, bye bye" *click

People that are jerks to people on crutches deserve to be smacked upside the head with one. How exactly do they expect you to go get and carry back an item faster that if they did it themselves? Can't you say "I'm sorry, I can't leave my register." If the POS went down why couldn't the manager switch you to the closer register?
Let's just hope that everyone who was a jerk to you today slips on ice and breaks their tibia. For an extra bonus I will hope that they all smoke so it will take them 2 1/2 times longer to heal. Cruches will be their best friend for the next 5 months.
I'm sorry for your knee, but I would stay on the crutches for as long as you are supposed to. You don't want to risk doing more damage.

At least your knee will heal. SCs, on the other hand, will always be scum of the earth.

Geez! With that kind of behavior, it makes you wonder that these kind of Christmas shoppers really understand the true meaning of Christmas (or season). It seems to them it only means getting presents.

                  Sorry about your day!
