  • Customers who want credit on obviously used merchandise

I'm sure we'll all see a lot of this type of thing very soon.

I sell gloves, among other things. Yesterday a customer hands me a pair of work gloves, and says "A guy returned these and we let him exchange them. He said he only used them for two hours and then they started falling apart."

Really? I looked at the gloves and they were absolutely filthy, like the guy had been digging ditches all day, or some type of heavy industrial work. I told my customer, "If he abused those gloves that much in two hours, he got his money's worth." (They only cost a couple of bucks.)

Now, if they had been clean and obviously defective I'd have issued a credit, no problem. But I'm not in business to replace something every time a customer uses it up. Next they'll be asking me to credit batteries that they only used in their iPod one full night. Hey, I sell condoms too, but I'll be d****d if I write a credit for a broken one!
