  • Odd, Cheap Remark

12/24 was a day when plenty of SCs crawled out of the woodwork.

    Here's an example:

We're currently promoting 30% OFF ALL ACCESSORIES. Woman brings a $32.00 woolly scarf to check out.

I say, cheerfully, "This is now 30% off, so that brings the price down to $22.40!"

She responds: "That goes against the grain."

Puzzled, I politely sayy, "I beg your pardon?"

She repeats, louder, "THAT GOES AGAINST THE GRAIN."

I immediately think, she can't possibly be protesting against a lowered price, so is there some flaw in the woollen weave - the "grain" - ?? - of the scarf which she has detected??

As I am closely inspecting the scarf, she sez: "I'm a Wal-Mart shopper."

I look at her quizzically. She continues, "I don't usually pay these kinds of prices."

Oh-so-polite, I inquire delicately, "Would you like to change your mind about this purchase?"

She replies, "No, I really like it."

THEN SHUT UP AND BUY IT! OR DON'T BUY IT! I DO NOT CARE!

(goes without saying that I did not actually shriek the above, except in my head)

"And Wal-Mart usually doesn't have this kind of quality, either."

      "I'm a Wal-Mart shopper."

And she goes bragging about that why? Ain't nothin' to be proud of, lady

My goodness! Supporting a store that isn't an Evil Empire? That CERTAINLY goes against the SC grain!

I'm sure the scarf will look lovely along with her Larry-the-Cable-Guy boxers and polyester NASCAR pants.

As an occasional Wal-Mart shopper, I'm trying to decide if I should be offended by some of the comments.

There is nothing wrong about shopping at WalMart if they meet your needs and you don't mind their method of operations too much. I don't like WalMart at all, and I still end up shopping there 3-5 times a year for items I just can't find anywhere else at that time.

But boasting about it! If is a low cost/pricing store what is there to boast about? More important why comment on it at-all if your are shopping elsewhere? After-all if WalMart has the same item for cheaper why is she not shopping there?

What she is trying to do is complain about the price without admit WalMart quality is probably not as high. Note, WalMart quality is high enough for most uses. I have never seen anything they sell that I would consider junk, but I have see higher quality of finish for some items in more expensive stores.

On the other-hand I have seen some very expensive items the quality of which barely rises above WalMart's products, too many brand names are rip-offs for what you get for your money.

While Wal-Mart can be considered an Evil Empire, I've ended up there a couple of times because they were the only place I could get a couple of things because of license deals.

                    They were:

The Eagles new CD and the DVD of DALE: The Movie.

                    Wally World has the exclusive.

Whenever I get a person claiming such-and-such is cheaper at Wal-Mart or other such places, I respond with "Well, everyone could afford to be cheaper if they used slave labor and took all their stuff off the back of trucks."

I get many a laugh from this.

I do most of my shopping at Wal-Mart because it's pretty much one-stop shopping for what I buy, and I hate running to this store for this and that store for that if I can avoid it. If I shop at a different store, though, I just accept that they do things differently and go on with life. I just hate people who complain that they can get whatever cheaper elsewhere. So, go elsewhere and solve both of our problems!
