Apologies for the length...This story is actually from a few days ago. I used to cashier exclusively at my store, but now I'm in pricing/signing and cashier only when needed. It was the Saturday before Christmas and there was one hell of a line at the tools cash wrap. I jumped in to help. There are some things that I don't remember from not cashiering in so long, but generally I can do a lot of things and get through most transactions without a hitch.
A lady comes up with a return/exchange for shoes. She bought the wrong size and wanted to do a even exchange. No problem. I check her receipt and begin doing the exchange, but run into a problem. Apparently, there was a special promotional going on when she bought the shoes and she got the shoes at a discount. The register was trying to force the discount onto just the one pair of shoes (she bought two pair). So, I was trying to make sure I could get her an even exchange without breaking rules. I knew I could override and adjust the price, it's just...I hadn't done it in years (literally) and I wanted ot make sure I was doing it right. As I'm pondering, a pair of lady customers get in line behind my customer, blantantly ignoring the sign that says "line up here" in front of the register. I asked them to move into the main line, but they give me a deer in the headlights look.
I tell my customer that I'm going to have to make sure I do it right, because I wasn't sure. My customer is fine with that. But the other ones...
They stand there for a moment as I call for MOD. I can't ask the other guys in the department for help because, well, it is the TOOL department, not softlines and they wouldn't know either.
I hear the other customer snark to her friend "Well, if you don't know how to do it, then why are you cashiering? I swear, can't do the job then get out of the way...makin' us wait like this..." and then they get out of my line and walk all the way around to the other side and get in line behind someone else. My customer gives me a "WTF?" look and says, "just ignore them; some people are just stupid and rude like that."
I blow some steam by telling her that I was just trying to help and was making sure I didn't mess up and I say it loud enough for the bitches behind me to here. MOD comes and tells me I'm doing it right. Turns out I needed approval for it anyway, so it was good that I called, as it saved time in the end. I completed the return and sent my customer on her way in less than two minutes flat and thanked her.
Then guess who comes rushing around to get in my line? Those two bitchy customers.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I can't ring you up because apparently I don't know what I'm doing."
They gape at me and I walked away. Ooh, it felt so good.
I did this in front of my MOD too and later she comes to talk to me about it. She said at first she was upset with me but the other guys in the wrap had heard what the customers had said earlier about me and so she said she supports my words and gave me a high five.

One more story from yesterday. We opened at seven AM and had a crowd at the door. They were all armed with buggies and came flying in. One lady rushed around the corner and started throwing outdoor Christmas decorations into her buggy, while others raced around to grab some trees. They all had it planned out; they were all one big group. My co-worker told me they were in here Christmas Eve scouting the place out and writing things down to get.
One of them yelled at me because some trees had disappeared. "They were here Christmas eve!! Where are they?! You aren't holding them in the back, are you?"
"No, ma'am, they were sold. There was only two of them," I said and she actually called me a liar to my face and huffed off.
Another one of the bunch was upset with me because I wouldn't give her more than 75% off on a Christmas outdoor animal decoration thing, which was the display, that had a hole in it and the motor wasn't working to move it's arms. (My boss gave me a little leeway/authority to suggest markdowns for damaged/used/display merchandise.) I told her that it was final price and we didn't have to sell it to her. I could send it back to vendor and get all of our money back (well, maybe). Woman eventually said she didn't want it. The item was 60 dollars and I was going to give it away for 15, good price, I thought. Ah, well...
Post Christmas greed...sad, sad, sad.
