  • she did what to her receipt?

Today, I had a customer who cut off the bottom half of her receipt. She then brought it in to make a return for one of her items. Thankfully, she also had a gift receipt so I could get the transaction information. Of course, without the bottom half of the receipt, I had no way of knowing how she paid so I could properly refund her money.

Of course, a gift card for the store was not good enough for her. She did not know it was going to be so much trouble for $12.00. I told her flat out that she should not have cut the receipt! DURH! Seriously, who DOES that!? She was so pissed about getting a gift card that she said "I'll go waste my $6 in gas, dig through my trash for the bottom half of the reciept and bring it back in to you." I repeated "You should not have cut it in the first place."

I wound up giving her cash as she claimed she wrote a check and showed me in her check register. I should have just given her the damn gift card and told her to STFU and take it as a little lesson in not cutting up her receipt! I just wanted her out of my face before I went ape-shit on her and got myself fired.

If another manager had been on duty, I WOULD have just given her the GC and been done with it. But the MOD would have given her the cash and I would have been yelled at for 'not taking care of the customer.' So I just gave the crazy lady what I knew the end result would be and saved myself from getting yelled at.

For $12 it doesn't sound like a scam but it's always possible. I would often have people bringing in receipts that their kids or dog 'chewed up', or they 'accidentally tore', etc., but only at the bottom where the method of payment was listed. It's pretty easy for a scammer to find a receipt and wander through a store to pick up the items on it before heading to a clerk for what they hope will be a cash refund.

And hi, everyone. First post. Be gentle please!

        It could be a scam.

At one of my mall jobs we had a lady that would try that kind of crap, literally, every time she came in store. It was so bad that whenever we saw her, we were to immediately refer her to a manager.

She had stolen a stack of loyalty cards and a stamper and proceeded to stamp out a ton of cards and present them every time she made a purchase. THEN she would come and return all the merchandise she purchased with the loyalty cards. Bonus points, because she would cut off the bottom of the receipt and then try to say she paid with cash. She would do this at multiple locations. Fortunately, my managers weren't morons- they never gave her cash. Unfortunately, they had no choice but to give her gift cards or do an exchange because they couldn't provide enough proof of what she was doing to ban her...

As an added aside, she had a tendency to bring her daughter and a friend with her. The friend would usually use loyalty cards as well, but not the same suspicious quantity. So, who knows how many people she stole for.

At least, corporate finally got wise- now the loyalty program is electronic.

I don't know how much merchandise or money that woman or her friends probably stole from the company, but at least they've (in theory) been capped off.

It makes me sick thinking back on it...
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK

Back in the olden days of multipart, multicolored forms, we had one couple that apparently bought a Cuisinart, returned it, then cut out the little tiny sliver of the return receipt listing the price of the Cuisinart and tried to use that on a stolen Cuisinart to get cash. Duh! The form was not white, like a regular receipt, but blue. The price had a minus sign (-) next to it, and it wasn't the full form. With my manager, that just was not going to happen.

She told them they could exchange it if it wasn't working, but otherwise we couldn't take it back without a receipt. They finally left and we alerted LP, who notified every store in the chain.

I figure that she could have returned everything on her receipt, or at least a more expensive item if she was going to try to scam.

Like I said, had any other manager been there, I would have just given her the gift card and she would have to deal. But we all know about those managers who go out of the way to please the customer....then yell at you for not doing it in the first place.

I had a guy once whose receipt was all scribbled on with a black ball point pen...right over the transaction number, actual price paid (he used a discount card), payment method, and other bits of info I needed to properly process a return (but oddly, not over the title or ISBN...hmmm)). He told me his kid did it... (And he was returning pricey computer books, so I know it was a scam!)

I'd LOVE to hear the "reasoning" behind cutting the receipt in the first place. The only explanation I can think of is "scamming" but...I could be wrong.

^^ If I need to cut a receipt, I am removing unnecessary portions like survey advertisements or just too much blank space.

ETA Extra long receipts don't easily fit into my wallet, so I'll snip/tear off what isn't needed.

She said she cut it to do the survey. Thing is, there is no need to cut the receipt to do the survey. You simply go to the website, do the survey, and enter the info provided. it is not like you have to send it in or anything.

Funny story for you guys....yesterday at the mall, at Victoria's Secret, I noticed the bottom half of the price tags were missing from a lot of merchandise. I wasn't sure if customers had done it, or associates had done it. With the bathrobes, half of them on the display were $70, and the other half were like $60......so I wanted to know how much the one I wanted was.

                      Anyone ever heard of that?

Were they perforated tags? Because I know some places will have those, and then slap a sale price on the lower part, then rip it off after the sale is over. Doesn't make *sense* to me, but I know it's done.

blas, I've known a lot of people that will just cut the price off of a tag when they give it as a gift. The reason behind it is so that the return will be easier to scan, though if the person is given a receipt, that really shouldn't be a problem.

Also, were the prices still mixed as $60 and $70? Or was it just one that survived? The store might have been told to correct that and make both the same price. I've seen scammers pull off higher priced stickers from tags before, demanding that price while saying that was how they found it.

The longer robes were more expensive. I didn't realize it because they were sort of rolled up as to not touch the floor. I found the one I wanted for the $60 price (they were actually 50% off). It's just that the lower half of the tag on these, perforated, is where the prices are.

Our store's receipts have nice '---cut here--' lines between the different sections like receipt, survey, and gift receipts. Most people seem to figure that out okay.

I always thought perforated tags were to make it easier to give things as gifts, as I've only ever seen them on clothes packaged as gift sets. But then, the only time we ever put a price sticker on something is when it goes on clearance, so it doesn't really matter much.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.
