I think $1.00 tip was fine, but some of the delivery people in my area expect huge tips (for no apparent reason) so perhaps that's his problem.

We used to order pizza when we were having poker night or such, and have it delivered from the place 1/2 a mile away. We'd order their 2 pizzas for $15.00 special, and I'd just give the driver $20 and say keep the change. Seemed decent to me for a delivery that was only 1/2 a mile.

One of our friends started working there and we found out that the drivers routinely complained about our house because we were 'poor' tippers. Apparently their drivers expect 50% or better tips for pizza delivery.

Turns out most people who order from there are drunk and/or stoned and unable to do the math so the drivers 'help' them. We didn't have that problem so it made us 'bad tippers'.

2ndly, when i called, i was paying w/a credit card and asked if it had a tip line on the receipt. the guy specifically said that it did, and they would bring the receipt.

When i asked for the receipt, he didn't have it, and says i can write the tip amount on the back of one of those hand written order slips. so i write $1 tip
CorCarei did not get the minimal service requested. IMHO $1 was being generous in this situation.

Normally, I'd go for $2 minimum on a delivery, but not this time.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

20 years ago my grandmother would tip a quarter for delivery or the bag boy at the store etc.. I thought that was just horrible and explained to her that a quarter just didn't cut it any more. Recently I was tipping the pizza boy a dollar and my much younger sister tells me that a dollar doesn't cut it any more. DejaVu!!

Delivery folks make more per hour than restaurant wait staff and they get paid mileage but with gas prices now I decided she was right and upped my dollar to $2. I don't tip by percentage though.. Just a flat $2.

          I have a few things to add/ask.

First my question. Did the $6.50 price include a delivery charge or was that the full price of the sandwich?

Having worked with Pizza Delivery before I can say that in the local restaurant I worked for there was a 1 to 2 dollar delivery charge if the address was on the outskirts of our delivery area (this was to cover gas money and went to the driver as such, this also was late 90's like 1997,98 when gas prices were still fairly reasonable). And yes, I know the delivery drivers made minimum wage which was around 4.75 to 5.00 or something like that at the time I really don't recall.

If the $6.50 was the price w/ delivery charge than $1 is more than sufficient in my opinion. If the $6.50 was not w/ delivery charge then I may up that to $1.50 or $2.00 but any more then that is going in to the a bit too much tip range (again in my opinion).

Here in Ohio we have two minimum wages. One is for employees who do not receive tips, and one is for employees who do receive tips. Tipped employees minimum wage is about $2 less per hour than non tipped employees yet most of the local Pizza stores pay their drivers the non-tipped minimum when they are first starting out.

Well, since I never have to deal with delivery, I forgot that they're supposed to get extra, so my first thought until I read the replies is that $1 sounded fine, just not awesome. So I can see how the mistake would have been made. And hey, at least he laughed it off, instead of being upset or whatever.

I deliver part time and I think that you need to forget about percentage when tipping delivery drivers. The percentage in tipping a wait person is based on the higher the bill the more work the server had to do thus a higer tip. In delivery I do the same amount of work regardless of the dollar amount. A person should figure a base tip for adequate service taking into account distance ( I think minimum $2.00) for all deliveries. Then add to it for extraordinary service, bad weather, etc. if you wish. A $3.00 tip will make a driver just as happy on a $75.00 order as on a $10.00 order.

P.S. I would never be so unprofessional as to let a customer hear me say something like that.

i realize the tip could have been higher... hell, in the past, i tipped 1.50 for the same meal... I don't know why i only did a dollar this time... but it happened and i was just curious if the guy should have been miffed that he received a 15% tip... even if it was just a $1.

So, again, thanks for everyone's input!

As far as an experience in aussie-land.... i was in brisbane a long time ago and my host and a few of our friends were getting a taxi ride home from a club... the taxi driver was shocked i wanted to give him a tip. shocked! he was like... "what's this" i said "a tip" and practically forced it on him.. it was only a couple bucks (hey, i was poor when i went) but still, i found it funny that he didn't seem to want to accept it. (mebbe that's cos i was drunk at the time)

I got a question about tipping pizza drivers.

The pizza shops around here have added a $1.50 or more "delivery" charge to every order. We use to tip them $2 or more but since they added that fee to "cover gas" most of the guys refuse to tip, saying they are already getting the delivery charge.

My question is, if it was you, would you still add on a tip? I still do but always take flack from my co-workers...

i generally try to tip 15% (see my op), even if they have a delivery charge. For example, i ordered a pizza. 16.46, i tip 3$, even tho 1.50 of that 16.46 was a delivery service charge (again, they are about a mile away, but some people don't seem to think that's a big issue) and the deliver time was about 40 minutes.

Let me tell you about those "delivery charges". Our store charges $1.50 for a delivery charge now, we only get roughly 1/2 of that. The rest goes straight to corporate. That is something the higher-ups do not want the average person to know for some reason.

Well I doubt I can change my co-workers on their thinking.

What gets me is these guys/ladies come in and get gas almost daily and never tip us. One co-worker says he wont tip any that come in and dont tip if they deliver to his house.

I would've given him $8 (23%) and called it good. But, to expect $2 (30%), sorry.

Servers have it hard, sure. But, times are rough for many people and they need to understand that, too.

Extra bits on tipping is for extra service. Not just average service.

Well I'm realising the difference between England and America even more now. I never tip delivery drivers unless there is an awkward amount of change, its just never been appropriate.

In England its expected that you tip anywhere where you get sit down service (you sit at a table and get served) and at posh bars but otherwise tips don't really happen. <Edit> Oh, and cab drivers, we tip cab drivers here </edit>

My local pizza place is 3 blocks away (barely a mile) and we get on with them pretty well but have never thought of tipping them. I guess England's just different.

As for the original question, $1 is well over the 10% which is what should be expected on average. and I am sorry, but for something that costs $6.50 you can't really expect much of a tip.

Are you supposed to tip gas station/convenience store people now? For full-service at a regular gas station I can see but when its self-serve??? Not trying to be sarcastic but I really need to know if I'm missing something here.
