  • Hypocrites!

Hello everyone. I've been here several times before, but this is my time posting anything. I am an hourly manager for a major fast food chain, where I've worked for the past several years. Anyway, on to the story.

This happened about 3 years ago, when i was still a cashier. Anyway, it was a pretty routine shift, nothing special until a bus pulled onto the parking lot. Buses are a pain in the ass, but it's just part of the job. That is, unless the customers themselves make it worse than it needs to be. In our store, there are two cashiers on the front registers, with one or two people backing them up when it gets busy.

When this bus load of about 50 to 60 teenagers comes into the store, I'm thinking "Oh [fecal matter], this is going to suck." How right I was. The leader of the group (and about the only adult there) comes up to my register and says that he needed the entire order on one bill. Not so bad, really, as long as me and my backup (the store GM, in this case) keep track of whats come up and what we still need, which is harder than it sounds. As we're putting the order together, people keep coming up and taking the half-filled trays before we even get a chance to cross it off the receipt so we can't tell whats been served and what's not. When we're fairly sure that we've got it all, we let them know that we thought it was all there, but weren't entirely sure. Their order came to about us$60 Then they proceeded to pay me with a travelers check, which is a bit on the unusual side. Since I wasn't trained to handle those, I completely failed to notice that they didn't countersign the travelers checks and so they weren't any good. Now, having used travelers checks since then, I know they tell you to sign those things twice, so they essentially got their food for free. (nearly cost me my job, as I found out the next day..)

To top that off, for their entire stay, kids kept coming up and telling us that we forgot this item or that item, many of which I remembered putting on the trays myself. Still, I just apologized and gave them the items, as I'm supposed to do.

All told, they ended ripping me off for $80 worth of free food. You know what the best part of all this was? They were all wearing T-Shirts for the Christian youth group that they were a part of. You know the type, the ones that brightly proclaim to the world their devotion to the Lord. They sure learned their lessons well....

As a consequence of this, I now find myself mistrusting anyone who seems a bit too much into their religion....

Anyway, I've been telling this story to friends and family since then, especially at large family gatherings and it never fails to earn a laugh, and I figured it couldn't hurt to share it here for everyone's enjoyment.

I don't care what religion they were, if you got a bus full of 60 teenagers, at least one of them's going to try to rip you off.

You may want to take out that part about their religion. I had a thread locked on me the other day that was unintentionally bashing someone's religion.

Hmmm... Do you work at the Arches? I worked there for a month, and we had a similar policy, fix it if they say it's wrong. I hated it, personally, because they'd tell me the order missed this or that, and I'd have checked the tray before it went out.

        <only thing I'm saying about this>
In this case, it seems fine. It was more of a pointing out the irony than anything.

The point is taken though. <not a mod hat on> let's keep it civilized people. <not a mod hat off>

I wonder if it's possible to blacklist them? I would certainly try.

Good God, are we now turning into the thought police? This is why we have mods on these boards. Now we have people looking out for things people MIGHT be offended by. I just give up!!!

I think the remark about the group they belonged to was valid, especially as they were wearing t-shirts that stated what group they belonged to, and yet were behaving in a way that seemed to belie what that group said they stood for.

This could apply to a non-religious group as well.

I was once part of a similarly-sized group (school) excursion. The poor cashier looked like he was going to cry when we all walked through the door.

A polite reminder that only the folks with the shiny "moderator" badge get to doff their "mod hats." While we appreciate diligence, the report button is the preferred method of contact - that little "!" in the upper right corner. Please don't call out anyone in a thread; we need the work, and you don't want us out running in the streets.

                  Thanks.

Anytime you see a large goup walk towards the door you tend to expect the entire experience to suck. I do. I hate seeing tour busses pull up.
But it sounds like your employer is more at fault than the group on the travelers check for not training you on how to take them. I often have to remind people that they need to sign them. The only comment I have on the religion aspect is kids act like kids no matter what group they belong to, especially when they're in a large group.

I agree there. Not many people know what traveler's checks are, how they're supposed to be signed or whether the business takes them or not. More managers need to go over this with their trainees, or the cashier should go to the manager if he/she gets a traveler's check.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

True, but it was a learning experience, as I now know how to handle travelers checks, and I know to insist on the customers leaving the trays on the counter until I'm ready for them to take them. My GM didn't hold the incident against me, since he was the one who backed me up on the order and he knew how the whole screwed up experience went.

As for my lack of violent feelings over the whole thing, thats mostly because of how long ago that it happened. I was beyond pissed at the time, but it's just funny now.

And keep in mind that I wasn't trying to bash anyone's religion, or religion in general, I do understand that most groups of that kind are out to do good, and not rip off poor innocent cashiers. I just thought that the religion part was what made the entire incident so funny in the first place.
