Today we were hit with a little bitch of a snowstorm.
Friday when we were hit by snow the store closed two hours early (8:00) and I was called and told not to come in for my closing shift (6:45).
Today my shift started at 6:00 and because of how things went last time I called twice to ask if I should bother coming in, once around noon and again at 4:30, just 10 minutes before I was set to leave home.
Each time I was told to come in, so I did.
Weeeeeell we closed at 8:00, and my frustration with this situation is a whole other story.
Anyway, I was on cash and not pleased, both because of this and personal issues, and a customer came through my line, didn't buy anything, but felt the need to scold me for not smiling.
SC: You should be smiling. You're going home two hours early. Not smiling looks bad on the store.
Me: I'm sorry, but I just lost half my pay for the day, had to spend money to get here (bus fare which worked out to 1/4 of what I earned for today) and have personal issues.
Normally I don't feel the need to involve my personal life, but the way this man spoke I felt he needed to be shut up.
SC: Well it's not very professional.
Me: Sorry, sir, I'm not a robot.
And with that I walked away.
All this reminded me of the day when someone gave me the same speech the day after I found out my grandmother died. I went into work, much to the surprise of my manager and supervisors, but was treated very well by them and was let off cash to do stupid little tasks so I wouldn't have to deal with people.
When this person ripped on me for not smiling I nearly burst into tears, and couldn't help myself when I said, "Well if someone from your family died yesterday I'd be wondering about you if you were smiling."
I hate people.
