  • Defying logic

This little tale happened a few days ago.

I'm working in the main shop. We have bikinis that have been reduced to $11; they have been that price for a good couple of months - reduced, not on sale.

A lady walks up to the counter with two different patterned and sized bikinis.

Me: Tired, sick and not completely on the ball
    SC: A master of confusion

SC: Excuse me. I was wondering if I could get the larger sized bottoms with the smaller top since I'm larger below than up top.
Me: Well... um... I'm sorry but I can't do that. Since most customers expect to buy them [the bikini set] with both the same size, it sort of defys logic.
SC: Yes I know it defys logic, but since they're on sale...
Me: I'm sorry but I'm not allowed to do that.

Conversation ends, so I go off to (continue to) tidy the shop.
The lady stands at the counter comparing the two sizes, then leaves the bikinis on the counter and exits.

    I... I just don't get it... ...But that's why they're SCs, right?

That is not sucky. That is just asking a question.

Where is the suck in that post? Really where is it?

I don't think this really defies logic. I mean, what woman is the same on top as is on bottom? Really? I hate suits that make you buy two pieces of the same size. I really like the suits that are sold separately. Some places do that...

I too fail to see the suck.

I don't seem any "logic defiance" in what the customer asked. Not all women are the same size top and bottom.

I have the same problem as the customer. I have large hips and back side and though I have a big chest too, I have a smaller waist (I like to wear the tankini tops and the boy short bottom for ultimate coverage, lol). I wish it was possible to mix and match tops and bottoms, it would make my life so much easier!

Yeah, I don't see it either, I really like the mix and match suits that some places sell. And I'm not the same size top and bottom either...

I always buy my tops and bottoms separate, since I wear a medium on the bottom and a small up top.
I've never seen bikinis that weren't sold as separate pieces, so I don't see why you would have to buy the same size for each piece.
It makes sense that she would ask. I mean hell, at least she didn't just change things around without telling anyone (assuming the bikinis at your work are sold as sets).

Come to think of it it actually defies logic to not allow different sizes for the tops and bottoms.
Women on the board: how many of you wear the same size up top as you do on the bottom?

I can see it, if the suits were sold as mix and match that would be one thing, being as it is sold as a set it is sold as one piece.

It would sorta be like taking up a box a few boxes of different patterned dishes and asking if you could make up your own box with a few out of each box

If your bikini size is different on the top and the bottom, buy it from a clothing line which sells each piece separately. Don't expect to break up two sets and leave the store with a mismatched set they can't sell. Because that's sucky.

                Edited to add:

And the suits were $11 per set. If it were me, I'd just by the two sets with the pieces I wanted. I'd get a whole suit that fits for $22. Not bad, considering I usually have to pay more than twice that much for a suit that fits.

i also see the logic; i am of two different sizes, but it's a SET; that means breaking it up renders it pieces, which cannot be sold separately.

it does suck that clothing manufacturers don't work with reality in sizing, but that's how it goes; would you open two different packs of socks/panties to mix and match just because not all the colors are to your liking?

i can understand the frustration on both parts, but as a consumer, she can always do some research and find other options.

*apologies if this came off as a bit nasty...i can see both sides to the argument*

I think that part of the issue is that not only is it two different sizes, but it's two different patterns. So not only would someone have to come in with the reverse top vs. bottom body, but they would also have to come in with the same taste for mix and match pattern/colour/whatever.

The size thing is not too sucky in my opinion (I, like all the woman who have posted) vary wildly top to bottom, but the two different patterns does qualify in my opinion.

I second the opinion that the breaking of the sets, thus rendering them unsellable by the store, and the bit of insistence by the customer for the OP to do it, is where the suck in this story comes from. Granted this is leaning towards the lower end of the suck scale compared to some of the stories featured here, but still, to insist on breaking up a matched set and purchase only part of it is a bit sucky in my opinion.

I don't see any suck at all. Yes, the customer asked a question, but she reacted quite well when told she couldn't do it. So they're sold as a set. All she did was ask!

Well, asking a store to break up a set of swimwear, resulting in two sets missing pieces that can't be sold, just for one sale, is slightly sucky in my book.

It should also be apparent from the price tags and/or signs in the store that the swimwear is sold as a set of two pieces and you can't mix and match.

At least the customer did not press the issue further or raise her voice or anything. That would have been much worse.

I'm another that doesn't really see the suck, except for the leaving them on the counter.

While I'm used to seeing bikinis sold as sets, I'm also used to seeing them sold as separates, so I don't expect them to be sold either way. And while my top and bottom actually match up size-wise, I still think it's rather silly to sell them as a set in most cases.

She asked, was rebuffed, made a statement, was rebuffed again, and left it at that. Would that all people stopped at two questions and accepted the answer when it wasn't what they wanted.

It's not really suck of her to ask a question. It would be sucky if she demanded that she get two different sized pieces of a bathing suit for the current deal.
