  • It never fails.

One of the smaller tables at my work comes in a box that kind of looks like the Tetris pieces in the picture (the red circled ones).

When they come packaged to us the boxes are set together on the pallet in a way that they all fit together (think of Tetris again).

People are forever taking two when they only want one. Usually I ask if they want one or two, sometimes I forget.

The other day I forgot to ask, and this man had two on his cart.
I scan them both through, he pays for all of his stuff and leaves.
    Then comes back.
Now, through the transaction he was pretty grumpy to begin with, but not all that bad. Annoying, but tolerable.
    Now he's an SC.

SC: You! You over charged me!
Me: *thinking: well it is possible, I do have a lot on my mind today* Oh I'm sorry. Where did I over charge?
SC: Here! You screwed me into buying two tables. *shows me the receipt*
Me: *sigh* I'm sorry, but you have two on your cart.

I walk over to the cart, that hadn't made its way very far, and lift one box to show that there are indeed two boxes.

    Me: See?
SC: Well that's fucking stupid. That's how they were on the self!
Me: Yeah, piling them up this way is just the easiest way to make them fit on the pallet.
SC: Or the easiest way to screw over your customers.
Me: *quietly to myself* Not really, but ok.

    Crap, he heard that.

SC: YES REALLY! Do you think I would have picked up two if they were set up differently on the shelf?
Me: Probably not, but if you noticed that there are two barcodes and that one box is typically not split in two you wouldn't have picked them up either.

Yeah ok, I should have let it go, but I was having a bad day and just couldn't help myself.
Thankfully, that statement made him shut up.

I understand that it's a pain in the butt to have to have one of them refunded, but for the last few months we've been able to return single items that were just purchased at the registers, to cut down the massive congestion at returns, so it's really just a matter of hanging out for a couple of minutes while I get a coordinator over to do the refund for me.
    Easy peasy.
Unless you're an argumentative buttmunch who just has to fight over something that doesn't require a fight.

The best part was when he made me take the extra box off his cart and move it aside while he stood there and watched, refusing to help me.
They aren't heavy (about 40Lbs) but they're damn awkward. Not to mention the fact that this was at about 9pm, my day started at 9AM, and I was runnong on three hours of sleep.
That 40Lbs turned into about 140Lbs.

    Jerkwad.

The morons that shop at my store.
9/10 times when someone is buying those tables they take two boxes.
I can see how it could be a little confusing because of how they sit together, but come on.
If it were me I may take two off the shelf thinking it was one, but upon looking at the box I would realise I'm a dumbass and put the other one back.

only do that if your store is overstaffed for stockmen(which, if it's a slow store, 1 person could be overstaffed)

it's fine to be a pain to SCs, but you don't need to create extra work for your co workers

although it wouldn't be any worse then when some idiot calls for a carry out, then they either leave, or "oh I don't know which one I want yet, I'll call again when I decide"

I have lots of stuff that comes in 2-3-4 or even 7 or 8 boxes.

Just knowing that stuff is not always packaged the way we think it should be packaged makes me more aware of the same issues with the stuff I buy.

Ok, maybe I have a brain. But I always check boxes on big stuff (like furniture) to see if their is a another box that I am suppose to get. It is just common sense, something that a lot of SC, as in STUPID customers seem to lack.

At one time, we carried a huge child's bunk bed/storage unit. The thing came in 4 or 5 cartons and only 1 unit could fit on a pallet.

It cost $700 and we didn't sell any until they want on clearance and were marked down to over 50% off the regular price. I can only conclude the buyer was under the influence of one or more illicit substances when he decided this was an item we should have in our store.

We have a few furniture items that come in more than one box, and every so often somebody will forget the second box when doing a carryout on that item.

At me store? Never. Carts guys are "not allowed" to help someone inside the store unless they need help getting more than one cart outside.
Although this policy is constantly changing and I only find out the most up-to-date rules when I call them because I need them fr something.

I did once have someone from carts come and help me unload a poorly packed cart so I could scan things then load it back up.

But it was a REALLY slow day, it was crazy humid out in the middle of the summer, and at the time this cart guy was dating my friend so he was definitely going to help.

The only time I ask cart guys for help with something like that is if they happen to be walking by. I'm always really nice to them and give them cigarettes when they're out so I figure a little heavy lifting won't kill them.

Me. I got two end tables when I only wanted one. The end tables were already in two boxes, and the way they were stacked was deceptive. Though it was quite obvious when the cashier scanned both. I noticed two things, they were cheaper then advertised, and I was prepared to buy a second one if I liked the first. That just saved me the trouble.

In the end I wasn't put out, it was only $20 or so. But the way it was stacked wasn't initially obvious.

As to what type of moron I am, I am a class BH7, sub class W.

Not to be argumentative (well maybe a little).....

If 9 out of 10 people make the same mistake, maybe there is a problem with how they are packaged/stacked.

After all, we say that if a SC has the same issues everywhere they go, maybe its them? Goose and Gander thing going on there.
