  • Higher gas prices =/= cheaper meals

Two men came in for beers this evening. They were pleasant enough, a little pervy, tried to get me to let them smoke in the restaurant (ew!), but whatever. They came up to pay, and one of them says to me,

Pervy man: This is a great restaurant, but you want me to give you some advice?
    Me: I'm all ears
PM: Lower your prices by two bucks. Working stiffs like me aren't used to having to pay $12 for a burger, especially with gas prices going up
Me: Actually our basic burger and bacon cheeseburger are both under $10. And our gas prices have gone up too.

Seriously? If anything we'd have to RAISE prices because of the gas prices going up. Higher energy rates mean our costs go up, means employees need to make more money to pay their own bills. Lowering prices would make the restaurant less money, and the servers would earn less in tips because the bills would be lower. And our menu is extremely reasonably priced considering the portion sizes. The only burgers over $10 are the double stuffed gorgonzola burger, the bison burger, and the halibut burger.

    Typical SC narrowmindedness

Not to mention . . . doesn't the restaurant need to get its supplies shipped to it? Gas prices affect the restaurant, too . . .

Yeah, doesn't really follow. I just figure some people don't stick their head outside their bubble very often to see how they fit in with the rest of the world. *shrug* What can ya do?

      Increased gas prices affect EVERYONE.

Or does the food just MAGICALLY appear in your store-room, thereby bypassing the need for trucks and gas?

hmm, for some reason, bubble wasn't the location i was thinking...

seriously; we raised our prices ONCE in four years, but from the complaints (i think the raise equalled out to $.05-$.10 per drink), you'd have thought we'd shot their dogs, stole their trucks and manhandled their mommas.

It's a fresh fillet of halibut with homemade tartar sauce on a burger bun. Very tasty.

I was once witness to a "homeless" guy trying to get free food from a cafe. He kept saying "Let me tell you about rules. They're made to be broken." and the cafe manager kept saying "my rules aren't".

Later the same "homeless" guy got into a late model Honda.

I am raising prices every quarter (90 days).

                        Seriously.

Our policy says we will adjust prices every 90 days IF WE NEED TO DO SO with no advance notice.

I don't hit everything every quarter.

I am working on a couple things today that have not been adjusted for 9 months. Going up April 1st, as little as 1% up to 5%. It is better to adjust every quarter than doing a bigger increase less frequent.

                        Better not complain.

I have 2 items that are going up 22%. Manufacturer just implemented an emergency price increase due to the cost of raw materials (nickle, steel, vanadium, etc) and the freight costs have gone up as well. Last price increase on those two items was about 5% just 3 months ago.

The gorgonzola and the bison sound good but I dunno about the fish.

As much as price increases suck, they're necessary. Someone has to pay for the cost of materials, shipping, fuels, etc. going up. I belong to a model train forum, and quite a few people bitch about how 'expensive' things are getting. I don't really have a problem with it, since I don't buy the expensive stuff anyway...and if I do (which isn't often, maybe a passenger car now and then)...it's a million times better than the cheaply made shit of years ago. So for that, I'm willing to pay upwards a bit. But, there are always bargains around--locally, I have nearly all the Penn Central items to myself

Bison's good when it's well-done, but not when it's medium-done (and I'm a medium-done-cow-eater). Something just doesn't translate fully to my taste buds.

Fish burgers are... interesting. Good about two thirds of the way, then terrible.

                              No clue on the gorgonzola.
