We once had a couple people in the store who stayed an hour and half past our closing time...and didn't buy a thing.

For as much of a pain it is to get people to stop shopping past close, one of our LP guys is great about getting people who are just hanging around out of the store.
We have our "bistro" area, which is the little snack bar type deal where you can get your 50cent hotdogs. There is ample seating and people seem to like just milling around with no clear purpose.
When the last customer is through the registers he walks over and shouts, "Folks, we are CLOSED and have been for X minutes. I'm going to have to ask you all to leave through this exit so I can lock the doors behind you and our employees can finally go home!"

Now if only he could do that with the people who are still shopping at 10:20pm.

That's just wrong. I'm sorry but if you are gonna hold workers that long and don't buy anything you should be forced to stay for 90 minutes while the worker mill about.
I mean damn, I'm guessing you all at least have the hours posted somewhere, even you you didn't make announcements.

As much as i hated working for the WM where i worked, our managers didn't hesitate to refuse people entry if they came after closing. One woman came in at 9:40 (we close at 10:00) and waited until 10:20 to buy 1 package of Hawaiian Punch(roughly $2) and she didn't have enough money, she demanded that we stay open while she ran, home to get an dollar and a half. Manager straight out refused. The lady said shed call the home office. Never heard from the H.O. regarding this woman.

I almost fell at this one woman's feet. She came in about 10 minutes to close & when she couldn't find what she wanted before we closed, she (get this) shrugged and said that she'd have to come back the next day when we re-opened.
I'm sorry, the person to whom you were speaking has been replaced by a recording. Please leave your message at the sound of the beep.

In a couple months my store's hours might change. We may open an hour later than we do now or close an hour earlier.

Or we may see no change at all.

If/when we do change our hours I'm sure that will become a rampaging tornado of suck, with the poor closing/opening employees being the trailer park.

When I worked at the movie theatre, we closed approximately 15 minutes after the last show of the night began. Almost every weekend we had people showing up 45 minutes after the last show banging on the doors and asking if we would sell them tickets.
1976: Movie Theater in the mall--concession had a theater side, but also an end open to the mall where non-moviegoers could buy crap. 15 minutes after the last show starts, we start shutting down and scrubbing the st off the hot dog rollers and out of the popcorn poppers. It never failed that some idiot would try to insist that we pop up some fresh popcorn for him/her. Nope, not gonna happen. Not even gonna put the spouts back on the soda machine for you!

Confession: I was once asked to leave a mall bookstore because they were closing
I was once shopping at one of the bigboxstores for a computer monitor. I really was under the impression that they were open till 8. Nope, they closed at 5. About 5:15 I realized that I was pretty much alone in the store, and booked it out, apologizing all the way!

Last November when the fridge died, we ran to Sears (appliances) to try to find a new one. We got there about 20 minutes before closing, and I made a point of telling the CSR that I knew that we would not have enough time that evening to find and purchase one, but we wanted to have a quick look-see at what was available. We did go back the next day and plopped down $700 for a new one. A few months later when the washing machine died, the same CSR recognized us, and we practically got the royal treatment!
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

addressing what mad mike brought up, the evil green apron has a 'ten minute' policy that allows for us to keep serving ten minutes after the official close, which means...they'll keep showing up later and later.
Ugh. I remember when our store tried that. Nobody every bought a thing in those ten minutes, they just sat there longer. Of course as soon as we get everyone out, the doors locked and tills being counted, that's when people show up trying to open the door yelling "Are you closed?" through the glass. After awhile we realized the DM's never came by at night, so we stopped bothering with the ten minute rule.

                  Everybody remember "Lost in Space"?

                  Robot: "Danger Will Robinson, Danger"

Well Robot is what every store needs at closing time announcing over the intercom:

"Closing Time, Danger, Closing Time, Danger"

"Danger, All Associates (employees, minimal wage minons or whatever) must leave the store.

                  Danger, customers, Danger.

Lots of clanging bells and sirens.

Danger, Store Closing in 5 minutes, Danger.

Danger, employees must clock out immediately, danger.
