  • "Do my taxes for me!"

Background: I work in the administration office of a university library. This is important later.

So, it's April 15, which in the U.S. means your annual federal income taxes are due today. I did mine a couple of months ago and already got my return, so I wasn't expecting any tax-related stress, until the phone rang.

    Me: obviously
    BW: bizarre woman

    Me: (opening spiel)

BW: Yeah, I need someone to help me pay my taxes?

    Me: Your... taxes?

BW: Yeah, my income taxes! They're due today!

Me: Ma'am, I think you must have the wrong number. This is (university) library's administration office.

BW: Well this is the number they told me to call!

Me: They told you to call the library administration office?

BW: Yes! I need help with my taxes right NOW! Your office provides this service!

Me: Hold on a moment, ma'am. Let me ask around and see if anyone here knows anything about this.

(I'm fairly new here, so I thought I ought to check. I ask all my co-workers and nobody has ever heard of such a service offered here.)

Me: I'm sorry, ma'am, but we don't provide any help with taxes here.

BW: But this is the number THEY TOLD ME to call!

Me: They must have been mistaken. We can't help you.

BW: Well, who should I call then?!

Me: I'm not sure, ma'am. Perhaps an accountant?

    BW: (muttering) *CLICK*

Good luck with that one, lady. Maybe you shouldn't have waited until the last minute!

Oh man, Librarians can get in BIG trouble for helping on taxes! Seriously, you're allowed to do no more than point to the table with the forms on it (was a university librarian for 4 years, and dad was a county librarian for 15 years).

But seriously, why would you want anyone OTHER than an accountant or tax preparer to even see the kind of personal info that's required? Sheesh.

Oh crap. I gotta do my own taxes.

She was probably mistaken--for years, my local library has always had copies of the tax forms on hand. Since I use TurboTax to do mine (which were done the first week of March ) I don't know if they still do that.

Even so, I always find it amusing to see people bitch when the tax deadline is coming--you had over a month to work on this, and you wait until now? Sorry, NMFP*!

I did mine Saturday - two days earlier than usual. Bless telefile!

Wow, she's screwed! Got mine done early too, and immediately spent the return. 'Course I didn't want to...

              I did TurboTax too!

The local library probably did have forms, but if we had any here in the university library, nobody in my office seemed to know about it. The other funny thing about her calling my office was that none of us are actually librarians.

March, for me (thank YOU TurboTax!!! Gotta love direct deposit!!)

Husband = two nights ago ...

I imagine tax preparers and accountants are probably running their hineys off today (any tax preparers or accountants here??). It'll probably be pretty darn difficult to get your taxes done by a qualified person.

yeah, mine were done feb 2nd, mailed in the next day... only reason I didn't do them sooner was feb 2nd was the soonest you could turn in a 1088 form for student tax credits.

so what is with the sc idiots waiting until today to even start

Turbo Tax here too!! I got my Federal taxes done in Feb, but mailed my State taxes in Monday. Because the state didn't take out enough from my unemployment checks the 3 months I was out of work, I owed a whopping $12 to the state. Waited until the last minute before sending it in.
