No children allowed!

Let me start off by saying that I work in a Casino. I am a cage cashier. Most believe this not to be retail but I kiss butt and deal with ppl all day. That to me qualifies as retail. Thus let me begin my horror story.

It is a gaming law that anybody under the age of 21 cannot be at or near the cage. This includes mothers holding their children. Even a baby. I did not make these rules but I do believe they are there for good reason.
It was a typical day of bitchy people and long lines. I looked at my next "guest" (We're not allowed to call them customers) and realized she had two kids with her. Sighing, I called out next.
G (Guest): I to cash out these chips. (She had poker chips)
Me: I'm sorry ma'am but I can't help you while there are children here.
Her face went into an immediate scowl.
G: Where am I supposed to leave them?
I'm wonder how she got the chips with children around in the first place.
Me: They need to be near the restrooms on the other side of the security podium.
G: That's ridiculous! I'm just CASHING OUT! We're leaving right now!
Me: I understand that but I can't do any transactions if there are children present.
By this time I am praying she gets it and goes away.
G: Can another cashier cash me out since you can't?
Me: No... (OF COURSE THEY CAN-- IF THEY WANT TO BE FIRED!!!)
Number one, children shouldn't be anywhere near the gaming floor and number two why is it my fault that I can't cash her out? Why would she be gambling with children there anyway?? How did survellance not see this?
She stared at me for like a minute thinking I was going to loose my job and cash her out. I just stared back.
G: well I'm going to go and talk to security!
She stormed off as I try not to laugh because she's going to get a meaner explanation than what I gave. Sure enough I see her glaring at me and taking her kids away from the gaming area. DUH!!!

I used to be a table games dealer in the casino here and we had the problem of the parents leaving their kids either in their cars in the parking lot or in the movies in the same building. It's just disgusting what some poeple will do just so they can gamble

She stared at me for like a minute thinking I was going to loose my job and cash her out. I just stared back.

Ah, the stare. The ultimate come back to any remark. It is the Excalibur of customer service. Customers think that they can win the argument just by producing the magical stare.

Either that or their brain is turning so slowly that the customer pauses for a minute.

they just had an inceident like that here in NJ.... a 19 yr old mother and the 21 yr old father left their 3 week old baby locked in the car in the Ceasars Casino parking garage while they went gambling... thankfully someone noticed the baby in the car and contacted security and the police... they police sat there in a car nearby for another 4 hours before the parents finally decided to come back to their car....the parents were both arrested and the baby was (and i think still is) in foster care.... and their famly says their kids dont do stuff like that.. umm..hello...they just left their newborn in a car for god knows how long while they went gambling for at least 5 hours!!.. and why the hell is the mother in a casino anyway when she's only 19 and the legal age to gamble in NJ is 21!!!

Kids left in cars was a big problem for us too. Standing order for us in Maintenance and grounds was to call security and stay at the car untill they got there. Standing order for security was to take a police officer with. They didn't take Any excuse. Cuff em and Stuff em. The record stood at 12 different incidents in ONE week.

I'll say this, at least she didn't just abandon them someplace to gamble all day...

I would like to know what surveillance has to say about this, but I guess I'll have to live the rest of my life without knowing...

I'm was never really sure about this, but the legal age to gamble in NJ can't be 21. I work at a horse racing track back home during the summer. I'll give you a hint, it's in MONMOUTH county. But anywho, you only have to be 18 to bet. I don't know why it is but it's perfectly legal. We have people come in regularly to make sure tellers don't let underage kids bet. Damn our state is wierd.

IIRC, the laws are technically you have to be 18 to gamble, that's why you can play the lottery, bet at the horse track, play bingo, etc. BUT since casinos offer (free) alcohol on the gaming floor, the gaming floor is 21+.

I always wonder what is going through the minds of someone who is pondering the option of leaving their child in the car? I can ALMOST understand the mother who is pulling up to a gas station to run inside for a minute to grab something quickly...ALMOST understand that...

...but the thought of "Hey, I want to go gambling, or drinking, or I need to work for 8 hours...I think I'll just leave junior in the car!" What options do they weigh these decisions against...what do THEY feel could be the worse thing that could happen?

Hhahha, I remember as a kid, my mom and stepdad would live us out in the car while she went into the bars. And it was ok then. Of course, mom could send me down to the 7-11 with a note to buy her cigarettes too.

Wow, another casino worker! I just moved and started work at a new casino, but I used to work in one for a year (a year and a half if you count my kitchen time). I deal now on the card games.

We dont allow chilren PERIOD in the casino, for liability reasons. No kids, not even babies who obviously wont gamble.

The only time I saw a kid in there was when someone's toddler from out in the mall (The casino was in a large mall) ran in suddenly past the security guys. we had a chuckle over that.

But fortunately it does make things easier.

What is bad though is right downstairs they opened a 'kidtropolis', a kind of play-land with kids where they can do different projects for play money and use it to do games and get stuff. I imagine its' better than letting them wander the mall, and its only open till 6, but stlil...

Yeah, my mom sent me to get her cigarettes. I remember when they were 90 cents a pack!!!!! Then she got mad when they went to $1.10!

Slightly but......
The funniest time I ever had in a casino was when I was taking my gf to a casino for spaghetti night (buy a plate, get refill free), and as I wheeled her in (wheelchair), the cashier told me that I couldn't being my little girl in after 10pm.

We showed her her ID (I was 22 and she was 23 - but only stood 4'4"), and her face turned about 10,000 shades of red. We all had a good laugh after - including the cashier .

Back OT though.........it just makes me want to do that fluster-dance that Donald or Daffy Duck does then they just explode when I hear about kids being left in the cars while mummy and daddy go gambling/in bars/etc! I guess their common sense floated away to join their IQ somewhere other than inside their brains. AGH!

I got that a few times myself back in the day. I would just stand there, staring back at them. After awhile, they would break down & say something.
