  • Just a quick sorbet tale. But it's not frozen yogurt.

    Customer comes up to my register and unloads her basket. One of her items is a small, pricey tub of sorbet.

    C: What's sorbet like?
    Me: I've never had it before, but I think it's similar to frozen yogurt.
    C: No.
    Me: I'm not saying that it actually is frozen yogurt, though.
    C: No, it's not like frozen yogurt.
    Me: ...
    C: It's like gelato.
    Me: ...
    C: If any other customers ask, it's like gelato, not frozen yogurt.
    Me: Okay.

    Um, ok, sure. I guess. Not that I would know, as I mentioned. But it's frozen and fruit-flavoured. Like frozen yogurt, do you think? Oh well. *goes back to tub of choc-fudge-ripple ice-cream*
    Michael: Maybe you'll be inspired by the boat party tonight and start a career as a pirate.
    Tobias: I haven't packed for that.

    isn't sorbet (sherbert?) a water base, where ice cream and yogurt are milk base??
    Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

      If the customer already knew that it was like gelato, then why the heck was she asking you what it was like?
      I hate when they ask questions they already seem to know the answer to.
      Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

        Well as far as I know sorbet is water based, but sherbert is actually different because it is milk based, found out the hard way when i found out I was allergic to dairy... sigh...

          here is a link explaining the difference http://www1.foodtv.com/cooking101/qa...,7329,,00.html

          basically gelati is like icecream but with more egg. sobet is made from a sugar syrup that is flavoured. sherbet is a mix of the two using sobet and milk and frozen yogurt is self explinitory

            No, it's not like gelati either.
            People who already know the answer to their questions should keep their lips zipped if all they're going to do is act like an ass to the person their asking.

              Sorbet is fruit juice based with no milk. A gourmet sorbet would have only juice and pulp and a regular sorbet would have water or artificial flavor or other ingredients added.

              Never never never any milk.

              Italian ice is a dilute sorbet that is frozen for the spoon. More latitude as far as sugar flavorings etc, More like frozen Kool Aid,

              One of those fuzzy definitions. Like the difference between Ice milk and Ice cream.

                I would actually ask him/her "Then why did you ask me?" Come to think of it, I don't meet many people who actually ask the question they mean to ask.

                  I just have to say this:

                  It's sherbet. Not sherbert. Sherbet. Sherbet. Sherbet. It's not spelled "sherbert", nor is it pronounced that way.

                    the only why its like yogurt is yes it s basically fat free. the only way its like gelato is yes its really thick but if i was going to describe the texture it would be more like frozen cool whip and the actual thing, frozen fruit juice

                      No it's not. Plain and simple. There's no egg in sorbet.

                        Sorbet – A frozen dessert made with fruit juice or another flavoring, a sweetener (usually sugar), and beaten egg whites, which prevent the formation of large ice crystals.

                          Sherbet and sorbet have the same root and in many cases are the same thing with regional variations.

                            Basic Gelato:
                            INGREDIENTS

                            * 2 cups milk
                            * 1 cup heavy cream
                            * 4 egg yolks
                            * 1/2 cup sugar

                            Fruit Sorbet:
                            Ingredients
                            # 2/3 cup boiling water
                            # 2/3 cup sugar
                            # 2 cups fruit puree (4 cups fresh peaches, apricots, berries, etc.)

                            Peach Sherbert
                            Ingredients:
                            3-1/2 pounds ripe peaches
                            1-1/4 cups sugar
                            1/4 cup lemon juice

                            Vanilla Frozen Yogurt
                            Ingredients:
                            1 teaspoon vanilla extract
                            2 1/4 cup milk
                            1/2 cup sugar
                            1 envelope gelatin
                            1/8 teaspoon salt
                            1 1/2 cup plain yogurt
                            1/4 cup corn syrup

                            There. Problem solved. While I admit my mistake of saying there's no eggs in Sorbet, I must admit I don't like sorbet and was going off a cooks instinct. I'm sorry!

                              I hate those, too. As for sherbet, it comes from the Arabic words "shar bat" - only one "r", you will notice. It was lazy pronunciation that led to the other form being used; it's colloquial, but still incorrect.
