Derby Day

    Derby Day

    This happened last year, but since today is Derby Day I thought of it.

    My hometown is Louisville, Kentucky, a place that goes insane once a year over a horse race, the Kentucky Derby. The thing about the Derby is that no one who lives outside of Louisville cares about it at all.

    I currently live in a town about two hours away from Louisville. No one here cares about the Derby.

    So last Derby Day I was working the Help Desk when a guy comes up and asks if we have a TV in the store.

    Me: No, I'm afraid not... (we're a bookstore ).

    Guy: You should have TVs here so people can watch the Derby! >storms off<

    Um...if you want to watch the Derby that badly, why didn't you...stay home and watch the Derby instead of going shopping? It lasts two minutes, it's not like it'll really cut into your precious shopping time.

    Our company has a store in Jeffersonville, IN. The only impact the derby has on us is that we never visit that location or try to get a hotel room this week.

      I wish! My wife is avid (read rabid) about every leg of the Triple Crown (well, Equestrian Science major, horse owner, breeder, etc.) In any case it looks to me as I pass back and forth through the living room that they manage to out fluff the Super Bowl VERY easily. Two minute race with four hours of lead in and an hour of follow up

        I rather like the Derby and I'm in Houston! But then again, I also liked the Derby back when I lived in TN.

          I used to work at a horse racing track. They'd call us in for the Kentucky Derby. You actually stood a decent change of scoring some cash in tips that day. And we don't even have live racing that day.

            They seem to care about it in Cincinnati (about 100 miles north) too.

              There are a lot of people who are in to the Kentucky Derby. I always thought it was the "old south' crowd but find that people all over the country are intreseted in it.

                It tends to be popular with gamblers, horse lovers, and people who want to act cultured (southern-style cultured, mind you, not faux snobbish cultured). The problem is kind of like Nascar or football (either version): most of the people who care about it are fanatical about it, and don't realize that not everyone shares their obsession. And the money they play football players? Pimping out the horses Stud fees are just as bad.

                  Why? So he didn't have to miss the horse being put down today?

                  We occasionally get people complaining that the Packer game isn't being showed on the TVs in electronics. We could put it on but corporate says not to. We have to show the company-approved movies and that lame-ass program about how to select the correct HDTV.

                  As for horse racing, I'll only watch the Belmont Stakes if a Triple Crown is at stake. Otherwise I have little to no interest in it.

                    Since it was last year, I doubt he was thinking about the horse that would be put down today.

                    I'm not sure if you meant that sarcastically or not, so sorry if I took it wrong, but please keep in mind this has affected some of us in the Louisville area. It's a very sad day.

                      Yeah, I missed it fortunately, but I walked back in the room and my wife was sniffling still. Did so well for a filly too.

                          We had assclowns calling Flowers-O-Suck all week long asking for Derby-themed arrangements at beer prices, upset when I had to explain a Derby themed anything was a week in advance special order and there were no discounts on it.

                          Saving my scant Xanax supply for the post "You Ruined Mothers Day!!!" whinathon in a week...

                            That was really sad what happened to the girl horse. My wife and I had a bet over who would win, i chose Big Brown, she chose the girl.

                            It was a great ending when our horses came in 1-2 but wow was she sad after the horse died. She's pregnant too (my wife ) so she was REALLY REALLY emotional about it.

                            The announcers seemed kinda indifferent about it but i guess its hard to be happy about something in the midst of a tragedy.
