  • Bananas are grown in tropical climates

    America does not equal tropical.

SC question I got the other day while stocking some bananas:

SC: "Hey, uh...do you have any like...bananas not from Mexico?"
Me: "Well like...I mean we have some other exotic bananas from other countri-"
SC: "Any bananas from the USA?"
    Me: ".....no....."
    SC: "*sigh* Okay."

I love American products as much as the next guy (except for American cars, but that's a whole other topic ), but some products HAVE to be imported.

*eating tasty banana while reading this* I'm ok with other countries producing bananas that I eat, that means less banana spiders here.
          PS: I'm terrified of spiders.

A tiny bit off topic, but when I was teaching Basic English and math to unemployed adults I had one of my trainees proudly proclaiming to me:

"Norway is the tenth largest exporter of bananas in Europe."

I called him on it, but he was adamant. Definite. 10th largest. EXPORTER (not importer) Yes, he was sure, Norway exported bananas.

I was almost in hysterics, because Norway probably exports more coconuts than it does bananas, but after a lot of internet research I discovered that there was a tiny possibility that he was exactly right. Notwithstanding the fact that almost no country in Europe can actually GROW bananas commercially, there is a small band of what I can only think of as Extreme Gardeners, growing stuff just for the challenge of it.

And there WAS a guy living in Norway, in a place called something like Hurdygurdyfurdystrom, who managed to produce a couple of kilos of bananas, probably by sleeping next to the plant holding a hair dryer. And maybe he sent one to his rival on Baffin Island, who knows?

Umm.... you're not supposed to eat the spiders, you know

Of course, I hate bananas, but I LOVE spiders!

                Spiders are great.

                Roasted.

Even in the largest family, everyone gets a drumstick, when the sunday dinner is roast spiders.

There used to be a small banana farm on the coast between Ventura and Santa Barbara that produced several kinds of bananas. Apparently they had the perfect microclimate for them. I believe they're no longer in business.

Mum (a mild horticulturist if I ever met one) knows some people up in New York State that grows and produces bananas for their friends and family. All you need is to keep the soil warm.

And plenty moist. Heck, you can grow Lady Fingers (Sugar Bananas) indoors.

I imagine it doesn't take much to become the largest exporter of bananas in Europe...

Hawai'i is the largest commercial producer of bananas in the US....and parts of it do seem to be tropical.

I was thinking Florida but what does Costa Rica have to do with anything, what with them not being American?

Well, Costa Rica is America....technically. You know, Latin America or Central America....
