  • Don't insult your server

A while back, I was at a restaurant that proudly displayed a sign stating they had the right to deny service to anyone they chose. When I went to work, I asked my boss if we had that right at the cookie store too.
My boss said if someone is being insulting or unreasonably rude, we could deny them service, but not to abuse that since a lot of people tend to be rude.

I was working alone one day when two kids came up to my counter. They ordered something that gets ordered often enough for me to have the price memorized so I told them how much they owed without even ringing them up. At first the kids were good customers, but one of them screwed it up.

Kid1: So what's with these cakes? Can you get them to say anything?
Me: Yep! You can either call in an order or place one in person and we'll make you a cake that can say anything you need it to.
    Kid2: So what's your number?
Me: The store's number is on our business card along with the cake prices.
Kid2: Aww, the blonde [word too insulting to be allowed on forums] is too stupid to know she was getting hit on.

I took the bag of the cookies they requested and pulled it back behind the counter.

Me: Thank you and have a nice day.
Kid2: But you didn't give me my cookies.
    Me: No I did not.
    Kid2: Why?
Me: I'm sorry, I seem to be too stupid to help the likes of you any further.
Kid2: And if I call your manager?
Me: Allow me. I'm sure after I tell him about the sexual harassment, he'd be happy to help you.

Kid1 looked annoyed and started hitting his friend as they left. I hadn't put their order into the computer yet so as they left, I placed their cookies back in the display cases.
I called my boss and told him what had happened. After he was finished laughing, he told me I did the right thing since what the kid had called me was extremely uncalled for. In the event it ever happened again, I was told to take their money and then ask them to leave

          Dumb and dumber...

Why even allow them in the store?

          Good smackdowns though!

Let's just hope that those kids learn that just because you're behind the counter, does not mean that your required to take abuse.

Good job for kicking them out. Very coolly done.

I wouldn't suggest doing that. Yes, they were very wrong in what they did, but stealing their money doesn't make it right, and they could press charges against you.

Still, you did a very good job in teaching them a much-deserved lesson. Let's hope it sticks.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

To be honest, I just don't have it in me to steal from costumers. If they were rude, I won't run after them if they forget their change, but I would just feel too bad about taking someone's money and then not giving them their order.

That said, I had a major problem with what the kids called me when they were mocking me. Now that I know my boss has my back, if I ever get called that again, I'd take the money and send it over to the lost in found they have in the food court. There's just some names I don't a person should ever get called and it angers me that some dumb kid felt like he could get away with calling me that.

Can you actually charge someone with sexual harrassment? As in criminal charges?

Paranoid companies firing people for smiling at a woman who doesn't like them aside... blood and fire, I wish I was exaggerating that... to be sexually harassed you have to, by definition, be harassed. Harassment is a criminal offense, so yeah, any legitimate case of sexual harassment can be criminally pressed.

IANAL, but...: What happened to the OP would be misdemeanor harassment, while more severe, fear-oriented harassment is a felony, usually tacked on with any charges for specific acts, such as terroristic threatening if they're stupid enough to be explicit, assault if they even motion towards getting physical, stalking, etc.
