In my Taco Bell days I remember when the drive-thru was slammed and a woman ordered something that came to like a dollar-something. She handed the cashier a folded twenty. She was working fast since we were really busy and gave her 19 and something in change. After the woman got her food and left the cashier opened up the "20" and discovered it was a one-dollar bill the the corner of a 20 dollar bill taped over the one corner facing the cashier! Gotta admit that was pretty slick and the woman got away with 18 dollars in free money.

I can't say that I've ever dealt with that particular scam before, but I've heard about variations of it.

I used to see these church flyers that, when folded up, looked like a $20. In fact, I think some of our members have ranted in the past about people leaving those as tips.
In fact, this one girl I used to know, who worked as a stripper, got one of those once. How ironic is that?Sometimes life is altered.

best advice, regardless of how busy you are: always check what you get initially, and KNOW YOUR PRESIDENTS.
i've had people pass off a ten as a fifty before (rewashed and altered); i knew something was wrong, but because of a long day and being exhausted, i wasn't able to figure out what, unfortunately-the president gave it away, after i thought about it next day (that damned hindsight issue). should have been grant and not jefferson on the bill. *sigh*look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

Giving one to a stripper, though... that's weird, even for the high standards of the people who see light of day here.

I saw that twice when I worked at McDonalds. What I would always do when cashiering, was I'd lay the $20 face down across the register drawer (not putting it away immediately) as I counted out the change.
Big reason for laying the $20 face down... a $1 bill says "ONE" in big letters on the back of the bill. First giveaway if you dont happen to know that Washington is the President on the front of a $1 bill.
The other reason for laying the $20 across the register is so that when the person tries to tell me they gave me a $5 or $10 bill, I could say "no, you didnt." because I hadnt put the $20 away yet. (we always put the $20's inside the drawer UNDER the cash tray...that way if you got a lot of $20's, you werent advertising everytime you opened your drawer)

Quoth Kusanagi View PostWe're starting too. The new bills look like monopoly money.
At my job they recently found a counterfeit of the new 10 bills and I couldn't tell the difference by looking at it but boy could you feel the difference...
I think the jerks that are doing the counterfeiting are wising up and its getting harder to tell. Though that could just be me because I've only seen like two countefeits now. Both of which were the new monopoly looking money. Go figure.

Never heard of that scam, but I would suggest that every cashier out there make sure that once the customer hands you the money, you take it, count it out, and make sure the customer cannot reach it to take it back.
Also, count the change back to them, but keep the 20 or 50 or whatever bill on top of your till (but still out of their immediate reach...know what I mean?), so that if they try and pull the "I gave you a 50!" shit, you can prove them wrong. You really need to see a neurologist. - Wagegoth
