Actually the guy was sitting there for another hour or so, and had lots of chips in front of him, so either it was just some random chips he decided to bet or he knew it would be a pain in the ass, some people try to slow the game down on purpose.
I was thinking maybe it was a lucky number. I wonder the same thing when I see those weird-ass bets on "Jeopardy".

oh if only we were allowed a calculator, that would make my job 10x easier.
That's why I switched from Black Jack to Keno. Can't do the math fast enough.

God only knows why I took a job that requires me to do math in my head, probably the benefits. :P
I wasn't there long enough for benefits to kick in (just a summer job). But I do remember the fantastic tips. Made as much in tips as I did in my regular paycheck.

Normally I'd think that too, but he kept changing the amount, not always odd numbers, sometimes he'd have like $5 sometimes $16 etc, so maybe he was just picking random numbers, who knows.

Tips aren't bad either, it's nice to have extra money on top of my paycheque.

Just work through every pair of digits, multiply them using your memorised times table (with the appropriate number of zeroes afterwards), and add the result to the total.

If you can pin up a 9x9 times table behind your desk, you don't even have to remember that. A small abacus may also help for keeping track of the total.
I know times tables, it's not that, just, when I try to do things in my head involving numbers I just go blank on some, because as I go I forget the last number I had to remember and so on.
I don't work at a desk, I'm a blackjack dealer, and anything other than cards chips and money is not allowed on the tables. Thank you for the help though.

When I'm dealing with off-number bets, I break them down into manageable portions. For example, if someone were betting $83.50 (3 green chips, a red, a pink, and a white) on a hand, and hit blackjack (3:2), I'd break it down like this:

        $80 (3 green + 1 red) gets $120 (4 green + 4 red)
        $2.50 (1 pink) gets $4 (4 white)
$1 (1 white) gets $2.50 (pick up the white, give 1 pink).

While we don't have the side bets on blackjack, I do deal 3 Card and 4 Card poker, which have 4:1, 6:1, 30:1, and 40:1 payoffs (3 Card), and even more varied payouts for 4 Card.

Generally, I don't even have to think in terms of dollar amounts, though. I know by looking how much they should get. Like, "Oh, 3 reds ($15), they got a flush, pays 4:1, that's 2 green and 2 red ($60)." It's become somewhat automatic now for me.
        Dealer hits... 21. Table loses.

This happens more often than most people want to believe.

I usually do that, it's how I figure out a lot of things that aren't what I normally deal with. I mean blackjacks usually aren't a problem for me unless it gets to be bigger numbers or oddball numbers, I mean, I know all the common one's without thinking.

luckily at my casino people aren't allowed to bet $0.50, as we don't have .25 chips. (well they can bet them for the dealer)

I shadowed 3 card, I've been told it's easier than blackjack, we don't have 4 card though, we do have shootout. I have yet to deal 3 card though, and they haven't gotten around to teaching me shootout yet.

At my casino, we have $1, $2.50, $5, $25, $100, $500, $1000, and $5000 chips. Only place in the casino that handles coins is the Baccarat/PaiGow Poker section, since commissions on those can result in owing parts of a dollar ($5 winning banker bet on MiniBac = $0.25 commission).

3 Card is a fantastic game, and I would suggest you learn it. It's quick, easy, and you don't have to deal with the whole hit/stand problem, you just have play/fold for the players to decide.

We have .50, $1, $5, $25, $100, and $500 chips. We don't have Baccarat/ paiGow though, we have Blackjack, shootout, 3-card, roulette, and Texas Holdom.

Well I was supposed to be learning it, and I did one shadow shift but never got a chance to deal, but I'm supposed to be learning both shootout and 3-card soon.
