Guest: yea Dave, I am planning a vacation for my family and I wanted some rates

Me: ok what are you looking for?

(she tells me and then I tell her what I have available)

Guest: hmmm....what else do you have?

(I give her another option and this countinues about six times)

Guest: ok well can you call some other places and make me an excel spreadsheet with their availability and rates and email it to me? Here is my email adress.

Me: Ma'am I cant do that

Guest: so how do I find out about other locations?

Me: you would need to call them

Guest: well I was sort of hoping you could do that for me because I dont have time to be calling a bunch of different places and if you could get info on a few different locations and maybe make a seperate Word attachment with general descriptions of the different areas along with a list of the local restaurants and info on the children's activities, that would be very helpful.

Me: ma'am.....I am not able to do that

Guest: so the answer is no?

Me: I am sorry but I wanna keep my job

Guest: whats more important? keeping your job or helping someone in need?

Me: well unless you'd like to pay all my bills, keeping my job is more important

Guest: well it sounds like you are in this business for all the wrong reasons. I guess if I to do this on my own, thats how it has to be. I will not be renting with you people. You are so not helpful.

So...needing to pay bills is the wrong reason to have a job? Would someone mind telling me the RIGHT reason?

Wow that's asking a whole lot. Wonder if she has her own personal secretary that must bow to her every whim. If so, I feel really sorry for that person.... I mean what on earth? She wanted you to use Excel and Word - and heck, I"m surprised she didn't ask for a PowerPoint of vacation photo opportunities!

How dare you not help her research the competition?! Well, there's one less asshat you have to deal with.

You know, I get the feeling that a lot of people don't realize that businesses are actually in competition with each other. Do they think it's all one big, huge corporation?

And how the hell is looking for a vacation rental being "in need"?

I wonder if there are enough lazy people that you could get a decent business going just calling places and organizing what they tell you into charts for them...

Of course, that's obvious enough I'm sure it's done already.

And you think I do? Look lady, suprisingly enough, there's only 24 hours in a day for me to get stuff done too, my days don't magically have more hours than yours that I can call upon.

              Oh wow.

So I suppose you have to stop what you're doing, which is answer calls from people trying to book and asking for things, which is what you are being payed to do, to call the competition, which will take up time, then present it in excel, then email it to her. RE: screw everyone else who needs your time, her time is more important.

I mean, she does have that nail appt. she has to make. She should get sympathy.

I am stunned by the audacity and idiocy of that client's statement. She was asking you to do hours upon hours of unpaid research which would ultimately end up costing your employer not just the hours you were working, but the business of this lady, who would have likely gone to some other place.

I think I'll call this Progressive Syndrome, for the insurance agency who compares rates with other providers for free. Apparently now I guess some people expect that everywhere. On the upside, she wasn't going to rent with you anyway, she just wanted you to do her homework for her. She gets an unsatisfactory for that.

She gets an F for asking you to lose your job to save her a few hours of homework time on top of it. I mean really, I'm just bewildered. On the other hand, I'm bewildered by many of the horror stories you have shared here, and frankly I'm amazed that you are able to handle it. I would either have let them have a very large piece of my mind (your superiors would get a healthy chunk as well) and been on my way.

at the craft store I actually got that quite often, if we didnt stock a product or our product was considered too expensive

they would ask who else sold it, where the store was, the phone numbers and information to be written down for them

people would call us "selfish and unhelpful" when we refused to turn them over to the competition....
now I could understand if we didnt sell the item, but more times than not they just didnt like our prices and thats too bad.
Heres the phone book look up the info yourself!

Aren't they referred to as travel agencies?

Most people don't understand why you just can't do certain things. People don't understand why I don't have Verizon's phone number or why I can't support a phone that they didn't buy from us. This ladies statements are along the same lines just way way way over the top when compared side by side.

Wow, that's unbelievable! You should've asked her if she wanted to hire you to be her personal secretary.

I usually head it in this direction:

Sorry, sir/maam, I can't help you with info about another business.

I get that a lot at my auto shop... people pulling in in the middle of the afternoon, when we've been booked for the day and turning away customers for hours. They'll try to ask 20 ways if/why we can't just pull their car right in. Then wind up huffy, and ask where they can go "where they'll take care of me." Oh yes! I know PLENTY of shops in town that have no other customers right now. They'll pull you right in and treat you like their best buddy. Such people never make the connection that we are swamped because we do good honest work, and the competition can get right to it because they have a bad reputation and little repeat business.
I become very brusque when they want to use my phone book and MY BUSINESS PHONE to shop for another shop.
Don't feel like the lone ranger.

When I was still at Dillard's, every once in a great while, we'd get the opposite. People would ask us where the furniture dept was. Some Dillard's do carry furniture, but not all. The closest one to ABQ is in El Paso, 300 miles away. So we would direct them to American Furniture over on Menaul, about 8 miles away. Instead of thanking us, we'd get scolded for "turning away business"!

What in the hell?! Was that all she wanted? She didn't even want it typed in MLA format with a pretty cover page, then made into a PDF file, with guided video tours of each and every property you had?

                              People are so FUCKING amazing.
