  • Um, hate to break it to you.....

Two kids come to the desk with a wrapped copy of Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter Guilty Pleasures Graphic Novel.

Me: You guys do know what this entails, right?
Kids: Some chick that shoot vampires?
Me ...where are your parents, I want to talk to them about this first.

So one of them fetches their mom, and I explain to her the general storyline of Anita Blake. Just when I get to something involving the "Vampire Sex" aspect of the comics (for a lack of a better descriptor of the act in the story), she freaks out and tells them she's not buying it.

Not 10 minutes later, the kids bring up the Battle Royale manga. Oh boy......

In other news, it reminded me of this: http://www.unshelved.com/archive.aspx?strip=20080621

This is where you explain to the parents, and the kids, that the plastic wrapping on those novels isn't to keep dust off them...

Anita Blake has very very gruesome murders, sex, very descriptive were-animal scenes, sex, really messed up S&M vampires...... hehe. I've read the book series, it used to be good (For adult readers, not children!). I didn't know they had it in a comic book novel, I'll have to go check that out.

I'm not familiar with Battle Royale, but I'm guessing it's just as bad? Thank god the mother actually said no.

Battle Royale, is a story of kids being picked to fight each other to the death on an island as a means of population control. Last one standing gets to live.
I've lost my mind ages ago. If you find it, please hide it.

Reminds me more of King's The Long Walk, and don't forget the classic A Modest Proposal.

Had a friend who worked in a book store tell me about this one. Apparently some ten year old bought a copy of Berserk #13, which has a 20 page rape scene in it. Dad got pissed when he saw it, but apparently it was Mom who didn't notice the four inch oversized "PARENTAL ADVISORY, GRAPHIC CONTENT" sticker.

The novel and movie (Many folks have disavowed the existence of the second movie) don't get as graphic as in the Manga. At several points in the Manga, Mistuko goes full nudity (Especially when she bites the dust). And she's a High School Aged Girl.

battle royal is a great film here is the trailer for those intrested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-T7yPJVvXw

each child is given a random weapon e.g uzi, crossbow, poison and my favorite the saucepan lid

second film is ok but is lacking compared to the first. it dose have the "saving privet ryan" beach landing acted out with kids!!!

I havent read all of the Anita Blake novels but I own both volumes of Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter Guilty Pleasures and I love it, then again I always loved visual aids. I cant believe parents dont look at what their kids buy. WHen I was younger I wasent aloud to watch simpsons EVER. I thank my parents for that and I hope to be that interested in my child to watch what she/he watches to see if its suitable before deciding weather or not it is.
Shoot, I broke my stupid stick....again.

I watched the trailer for Battle Royale (thanks, Hibble), and as soon as I realized Beat Takeshi was in it I knew bizarre would be the minimum of the movie.

I used to read the Anita Blake books, but starting with Bloody Bones it just seemed to turn into supernatural porn.
