  • seriously, think of better ways to scam us

OK, I just had my favorite scam attempt at this job... guy wants to get out of paying for a movie, so this is what he came up with.

sc- I don't think I should have to pay for my movie last night, because I didn't receive the wake up call that I had scheduled.
me- I'm sorry about that, what time did you schedule the wake up call *as I say this I bring up his room on the phone system*
sc- it was supposed to happen at 6am
me- sir, it's 5:59 right now.
sc- well my watch says it's 6:03 and the wake up call hadn't come through by 6:01 by my watch when I left the room.

seriously, either this guy was an idiot who thought he could scam us, or that guy was just a prick for expecting us to reset our master clock for the phone system because his watch is fast. Oh and then he wanted to be moved to an earlier shuttle, ok no big deal, shuttle hadn't left yet, so he runs out tells the driver he wants on that shuttle, just has to run inside and get his luggage, shuttle driver says, sure no problem. So what does this guy do, he comes in, checks his email and grabs breakfast before going out to the shuttle... which btw already had 2 people waiting on it who actually got there ready ON TIME, and may be late enough to make the shuttle late on all the rest of his runs today.
I do believe there is a special place in hell for that guest.

If I were that shuttle driver I would have left.

Is your clock synced through a computer? It is likely syncing to the atomic clock which is the most accurate clock possible.

we do also have an atomic clock... the phone system is like 2 minutes off of it, so still pretty accurate.

Even if it's not; most of us grew up in a time and place where, although accurate time is the norm, we don't REALLY expect clocks to match. Hell, I've got two in my kitchen that never do And although we're a little more AR about it than Slavic or Latin cultures, I certainly don't think a five minute discrepancy is anything to worry about.

Which is all moot anyway, 'cause how does no call = free movie? Especially for a guy who had time to have breakfast.

I would have told the shuttle to go on as soon as he sat down to breakfast.

So what did the wake-up call (or lack thereof) have to do with the movie? SC logic is hard for me to follow.

SMS, I totally agree. When I set a time in which others are affected, I assume 5 minutes on either side of the time as being "on time". I just love atomic clocks and total time accuracy. And would love to say, "sir, I assure you my time is right" and then go geek on his butt. That tends to make them go away, too.

Funny thing is he apparently did not need the wake up call in the first place.

Absolutely nothing. One is pretty much free practically anywhere from motel 6 on up, the other can cost upwards of a few bucks.

Why did he need the wake up all if he was up before the call? Never mind, trying to figure that out is not good for my health.

A bit OT, but we had a guest the other day who didn't get their wakeup call and then woke up after their flight had already left.

                              So, they were pissed.

Now, don't get me wrong. If they asked for the call, we effed up, BUT it is very easy to set your own wakeup call from the rooms, there are alarm clocks in every room, and don't most people have cell phones with alarm clocks?

AND, maybe I am just weird, but my brain is so fantastical that if I know I have something important going on the next day, I am always awake anyway. I also take some personal responsibility and have another alarm set!

                              What do you all think??

(I will say it again, if they did call and ask for one, then yes, we screwed up....)
