Heres a question I want to ask you guys. The forum is spread out all over the US so this will be fun. Are your college kids as over protected, spoiled, and just flat out stupid like mine. I have college kids that come in and have no idea how to make a transation. As in they can't count money(I have to show them how to count money),and they think they can walk around with wanted item and throw money on the counter without me seeing the item. And the money confuses me most these are not international students(these are american kids).I had to show one moron how to count change. These kids are in college. And then their one credit card is declined they pull out many more. I work 40+++ hours a week and can't afford to have but one credit card. And then I've had the big boobed, blonde bimbos come in.Talking about how they got a brand new mustang. Oh I just wanted it so daddy bought it. And then she proceeds to bounce her huge boobs over to the newspaper stand and say"I should buy a newspaper,I have no idea whats going on in the world.I have no idea who all these people are."HEHEHE9bimbo laugh.

I don't know I just feel like when you buy your kids everything and not make them work for it,I think you hurt them more then you help the. They are going to get out into the real world and its going to eat them alive.

I swear to you their elementary teachers worked like hell to teach them money skills. I know "blame the teacher" has been the mantra for years (decades), made louder by NCLB, but sometimes one must wonder what's wrong with teh kids for the utter lack of post-test retention.

I never bought into the blame the teacher code. While there may be some lousy teachers, if a kid wants to learn, he or she will. You have to put most of the blame on the kids' background. Family and environment can take most of the credit or blame for a students' learning skills.

        i agree
i've had awesome teachers who really cared
and i've had terrible teachers who still used notes they wrote in the 70's
but i studied my ass off to get where i am
(just got BS in Genetics and just started working on PhD in microbiology)

ps, i know how to count money too!

If it makes you feel any better it's not just US students that act like that, UK students do as well...

I was thinking more about this topic. Maybe the parents think it's not needed to teach their children to count money.Because society has been going to debit and credit cards so much.

It's more likely because the parents spoiled these children rotten and the kids never had to *omigoshareyoureadyforthisbadword* BUDGET.

I've been buying my own clothes and school supplies since I began secondary school. You learn how to budget pretty well when you don't want to be stranded from spending your bus money. (Never did happen)

Parents need to start teaching their kids some responsibility. Tt makes me want to strangle them and their hellspawn when they can't seem to figure out actions ---> consequences.

I've been saying for years that humans as a whole are getting dumber and dumber as time goes on. True we can do things now that we never good before, but the Egyptians didn't have Core 2 Duo and Quad processors for work either.

Take away modern man's power/electronical gadgets and you'll have billions of people wandering around asking "but how do I know if it's time to eat, and how do I get food?" Because they won't have it handed to them in a nice little package with instructions.

Anyway.... just saying that I think kids these days are just the new trend for stuff. Everything's becoming electronic -- so they aren't taught (since they don't really see) how to do the things we used to do every day. I need a check for something, but the last time I had to order checks was 1998 -- my bank has been bought out twice since then (and my old checks are no longer valid). Back in my parent's days they'd go through 1000-2000 checks a year. I use maybe 3 checks every 5 (and that's just because they don't take cash or credit or electronic payments).

My niece just started college this fall and we are worried because she is an utter ditz. We all know that she's going to have bad things happen because she's going to forget something important. But one of the important things about college is it provides a safe place so that when she messes up, it won't destroy her life. That's one of the ways that college teaches you and helps you grow up.

So my niece, and the airhead kids you have to deal with, at some point are going to fail. Fail big time. Who knows at what, but it's going to happen. Part of learning is getting back up after the fail and fixing it. True wisdom is looking at others and learning from their fail without having to do it yourself.

As a [american] college students, I feel embarrassed to say it but my generation is quite terrible at the basic skill sets. Only a few of my friends know how to estimate tax/tip in their heads.

Perhaps we should use math CAPTCHA to keep our mathematical skills sharp?

I also want a cell phone jammer built into every register in every store.

I went to get my books today (rental books, one of the only colleges left that still does this). The line was surprisingly short--only about 30 yards long, which equates to only a 20 minutes wait (when it's normally wrapped around the entire bookstore two-fold during rental time which is a two hour wait). I heard one girl bitching and moaning about how the line was too long and how she just wasn't going to get books if she had to wait.

If I could mentally slap someone, I would have done it. I heard others talking about how they totally fell asleep in their classes. Like it was cool. I fear for us, I really do. If I'm paying this much money to get an education, by damn I'm going to do the best I can.

As a big busted blond myself, I have to agree that these Paris Hilton wannabe's need to be ran over multiple times by a stampede of angry animals with sharp hooves or a tank.

As for the stupid college kids part. I believe that might be more from the parent's. Alot of parents don't seem to understand the need to teach children budgets and how money works. Schools only teach so much and I certainly don't recall my school covering anything more then budgets and checks. I did not know anything about credit till I moved in with my husband. I lived off my savings and never had a checking account either. My husband still manages the money and does do everything over the computer cause it's easy but we at least know how to fill out a check. This will be passed on to our son when he's old enough and he will learn that money does not grow on trees, even if we are better off then say my brother and sister-in-law. Who are working on the next generation of entitlement whores sadly.

Okay, these kids are usually 18-22 years old. Not anyone's brightest years. Different backgrounds and experiences in high school and family life shape these people. The only work I did during high school was a little typing for a family friend (my parents didn't want me to work - they wanted me to get a scholarship). So, I was pretty ignorant about a number of things when I went to college. It's the first 'real world' situation for most people. I lived with Big Sis my freshman year, which was a good transition.

I'm not saying they don't act stupid, I'm saying...just cut 'em a little slack.

Our local breed of college student is more likely to be the Trustifarian. I loathe the Trustifarian. These are kids that reek of patchoulli, have dreads, multiple piercings and stupid tattoos. Not that there is anything wrong with these things but in this combo really who is going to hire you aside from a coffee shop - I surely don't want my doctor or architect to look like that, but that is beside the point because these kids have never had a job.
These brats come in and buy expensive tickets to jet off to Asia or Europe and they don't care about the price because their parents are paying for it.
Probably some of it (my hatred) is jealousy because when I was a college student I worked full time night shift and could barely afford rent. My folks have the money to send me off on a walkabout but it would have never occured to me to ask them for it (they paid for my tuition). What is the point of going on a trip like that if you didn't earn the money for it in the first place? In my mind, working and sacrificing for a trip like that is part of the whole experience.
