  • Why do you think they call it "ID"? -.-

Ok, so this particular rant is directed mainly at students of later high-school years (year 10-13 in particular), in New Zealand we have a fairly strict system on buses where anyone under 15 years of ages is automatically granted "Child/Student" fare, but anyone 16-19 who wishes to get "Child" fares must either be in school uniform or have a valid school ID for that year (as it is perfectly legal for kids to drop out of school at 16 years of age at the current moment in time)

As a consequence of this the drivers are under the policy of that if we get a passenger hop on a bus that looks to be 16 or older and asks for a particular fare without explicitly stating "Child fare" or showing a school ID, to issue an adult fare. While this works in theory, it does have its problems. Namely those who kick up a stink when we do this, and say "Oh, but I'm a student", and pull out a perfectly valid ID card AFTER we have already printed the ticket. Umm, WHY DIDN'T YOU PULL OUT YOUR ID WHEN YOU BOARDED OR ASK FOR A CHILD FARE? (Note: It is quite clearly posted on all our buses that students must have an ID card or be in uniform to qualify for child fares. Cancelling an already-printed ticket also causes extra paperwork for us after we finish for the night. Sure we get paid for the extra paperwork, but the last thing a night shift driver wants to be doing at 1am is mucking around at the depot filling out annulment slips due to a students ignorance)

The most irritating thing about this is even though 99% of the time it is purely the students fault for not stating they wanted a student fare or having their ID out, we are still expected to nullify the ticket and re-issue the ticket (thus causing the forementioned extra paperwork after the shift is over)

Anyone else had to deal with problems with people (mainly children) not showing their ID and expecting people to be able to instantly guess that they are "children" (especially considering some of the kids that hop on my bus I often see smoking before they board my bus, and are often dressed up to try to look 18 or 19 years old. Erm... if you're wanting to be treated like an adult and want to get into adult places (nightclubs, etc), PAY ADULT FARE LIKE AN ADULT.)

I imagine that happens a lot at movie theatres and any other places where ID is required. Sucks to reissue. If I could make personal rules, it would be show me your ID before the ticket is printed or pay full fare. Next time, you'll have your ID out, won't you?

Well, I can't speak for how the theaters do it now, but eight years ago, when I was working at the movie theater, I didn't print a single ticket until I had ID for an R-rated film, and one ID per ticket, as well, unless it was someone buying them for their immediate family (who, unless it was someone obviously old enough) had to be physically present.

But then, I've noted this before in my Movie Theater SCs thread.

The university students here get free pass by showing our uni IDs. I ride the bus a lot, so I always have my ID out, but the one time I couldn't find it immediately, I shrugged and paid the full fee. Not like it mattered to me, and we weren't going anywhere till some form of payment went through. There's always the pressure that the transaction has to go fast, to keep going.

We do get charged in our student fees, but it's like ten bucks to ride free anytime, anywhere.

I felt a little ridiculous though, after I sat down that my ID was in the one pocket in my wallet I didn't check.
