I was just wondering.. Is there something that be done about the idiots that come in and read the entire magazine? This drives me nuts. Its always the same people too and people aren't embrassed or anything about doing it. And its not just one article, its the entire magazine. I've even had to throw people out at closing.(I don't do the wait til the jackass is done crap. When its closing time, its closing time) Get out!!!!!!
Usually what I do is I make it very noisy in the store. Dropping full boxes, coughing, turn up the music real loud.It usually works.

But they're customers, they are entitled to do whatever they want!!. You are merely a simple worker.

I used to work at a music store, when we wanted to kick people out at closing, I found that playing the Ministry Cd that has "Stigmata" on it, or some old Skinny Puppy would do the trick (for most people).
    Aaah, the old days.

Newspapers too. They'll grab one and spread it all over my counter just to see the lotto numbers or the score to a game.

Seal up the magazines or keep them behind glass so if someone asks for one they have to pay for it first.

Or you could use the old standby, Cannibal Corpse.
Or, if you REALLY REALLY REALLY want them out, Waco Jesus (look them up and take a look at some song titles).

In a situation like this, I might go with The Frogs.

Nice, pleasant, acoustic guitar opening, kinda folk music-y, and then.....

So, what really gets me are the bookstores that have little coffee bars in them. They let people bring books and mags into the coffee area, leave them on the tables...everything.
Why not just buy a coffee and read the paper or a magazine for free? No one stops you, and you can stay as long as you want to.
Sheesh. Like anyone would want to buy the things with your coffee stains on them.
                    I no longer fear HELL.
                    I work in RETAIL.

I have been caught in situations where I have been in a store at the last minute (usually when on vacation), kids are pestering 'Mom can I pleas just look at...' Me: 'No...these folks want to go home, we came for x item we are getting x item and that is it zip it'

There's nothing wrong with politely asking people to wrap it up because you're closing - we do this at the library about ten minutes before the official closing time. Of course, that doesn't always eliminate the people who wait until the last minute to decide to check items out or are slow to get off the Internet computers.

I have similar problems with law supplements. Law students will come in and thumb through EVERYTHING, debating which one's better, but never buying the damn things! Or, even better, they'll bring their casebooks in, grab some supplements, and take notes from the supplements in their casebooks so they don't have to buy them. I kick them out, when I'm allowed. So, naturally, the cover gets bend, pages get a little worn and THEN I get more law students coming in wanting the books for discounted prices! They claim they're used, because they're shelf worn.

I have to bite my tongue everytime to keep from telling them if their fellow students wouldn't manhandle everything they'd still be new But as they're not overtly damaged, just standard shelf wear, then it's full price. So sad.

I had a woman ask real nice what time do you close.I told her at 3:00 five mins ago and she said oh.
And then went over to look at something else.So I did have to get kinda snippy then.

So being nice doesn't always work.

Not to mention that there are some idiot managers and corporate muckety-mucks who wont LET the employees tell a customer they are closing.

Personally, I have never understood that concept. I know retail is all about making the money, but it would seem to cost more in labor for someone to stand around waiting for an SC who is likely not buying anything than to politely inform someone that they are closed and need to check out.
