  • Trust me. It will be at the bottom

of one of these 4 pallets I have to unload. I'll put money on it.

Had a very elderly lady come in wanting a specific item that had just arrived in my consignment 5 minutes earlier. Huge pallets of stock each about 5 feet high and approx total of 5 tonnes in 15 kg boxes.

I'm only little (5 feet tall 110pounds) but I can unload 1.5 tonne in 1/2 hour by hand so this lot is going to take me a while to get through. Would this old dear like me to call her when I finish. Oh no. She wants to sit there and watch me do it and then she decides she wants to help!

She must have been about 80 and bless her but I could just see how that would pan out. Fianly convince her I will call her when I was finished and guess what? As anticipated her item was right at the bottom and in the middle of the last pallet. Excellent.

It's for this very reason that we basically lie about when our deliveries come in at my store. If someone demands an answer to when something will be in, and we know it's in the freight that just came in, we'll tell them "tomorrow." It's just FAR too much hassle and takes WAY too much time to parse the load just to find one thing for one customer. It'd be one thing if it was right there and we could get at it easily, but Murphy's Law dictates that this is a rare occurance.

I would have done that but they were piled up at the back door 3 feet away from her. No hiding that lot.

We get a lot of merchandise in green totes and I have always told people, if the item you want is in a tote, you ae going to have to sneak up on it or it will run to the bottom of the pile.

And if the customer or a boss makes a fuss, it will run to the bottom of the last stack in the corner.
