  • I know more than you do...try me (somewhat longish)

So I can understand women being leary about a guy helping them pick out a bra...embarassment....shyness.....first bra (in the case of a girl buying a training bra). But my gawd I am so tired of hearing that I can't help them because men don't wear bras we don't know anything about bras. Uhm....yeah...hate to tell ya...a man invented bras.....

ANYWAYS..I had a lady (using term loosely) come in yesterday and inform me that she needed a 56FFF bra (we dont make them) I just gave her a look because I couldn't see how she would take a 56 band OR a FFF cup. I informed her that I didn't think that she would be that size. I informed her that I thought that she would be a 40DD at the most (which we DO carry). Lady started arguing with me that I am a man I dont know anything about bras (here we go again...) so I offered to have my female co-worker do a free fitting.....

Lady comes out...my co-worker informs me of her size so I can help her further....

    .....a 40DD....

I start to TRY to help her find a bra, and the lady says "you are a guy you dont know anything about bras...I want her to help me..." I replied "I can do that if you want me to...just be aware...shes been with us for 3 weeks...Ive been here a year AND Im the manager...I know more about bras than most women..."

she replied that she doubted that. So I just replied "let me try." Deciding to show her that I DO in fact know about bras I started my line of questioning...

"do you want cotton or microfiber?" Easy answer.....
"do you want underwire or no wire?" Again...easy answer
"do you want single lined or double lined?" Not as easy...
"how many clasps do you want?" easier than the last one...still not easy
"would you like straight straps or racer back?" Not as easy....
"do you want a fixed bridge or a bridge with a pivot point?" customer at this point was
"Do you want one with a straight stitch, laser cut, or zig zag stitch?" again

Now dont get me wrong...I wasn't being sucky..I explained what everything was and what they do at every step...it just irritates me that women automatically assume I dont know anything because Im a guy.....Ive even had women tell to get to the men's side of the store where I belong. I just politely inform them that its MY (as a manager...I don't own it) store and I will go where I want to.

OMG I would love that kind of help. Everytime I go bra shopping I can never get any help other than "I think the cotton bras are over there" with a cow-eyed look complete with cud chewing....

Wow. I want to go to your store!

I need a sizing, and none of the stores I go to carry 40 band sizes. So I'm kind of stretching 38s to the limit.

But that sucks. I can't understand why people can't accept that gender and knowledge about an certain things aren't the same thing. I know plenty of female mechanics, male nannies, guys who work at women clothing stores, etc. I mean, it was a female doctor who did my friend's husband's vesectomy.

I don't know much about bras. My knowledge extends only to how to remove one (with a little fumbling), and that they are uncomfortable if not properly fitted.

But that second point lets me appreciate that with no less than seven questions, producing approximately 300 possible combinations (and that's not even counting the size!), you *do* know what you're talking about.

Gah, bras. Since I've put on a pound or two over the past years, I decided to ask for a fitting. The clerk measured me at a 42B . I had been wearing a 36C. So, Mom goes out to get some bras - they're huge! Finally, I went to Victoria's Secret, got a proper fitting (38C ), and they were having their semi-annual sale to boot.

I have no idea how clerk #1 was so off on the fitting.

Actually, the modern bra was invented by a woman. Constantly tired of a corset not being able to hold her up, she told her maid to fold two handkerchiefs diagonally and sew them together to hold up her bosom(sp?). That's the story I read in a book of amazing women.

Where is your store? I hear I'm everywhere from AA to (small) C. And the band size is never the same either.

It doesn't surprise me that some men know more about bras then women. Women simply wear them. Men take them off.

Hmmm...sounds like I need to make a trip to visit family that I haven't seen in 20 years. How far away from Wausau are you?

So after all this talk of bras I decided to go get fitted. It turns out i was wearing a Cup too big. I told the girl told me I should go up a band size and down a cup. I tried that, but the cups were too big. So in the end I bought the same band as before, but the cup size one smaller. Then I got an expander hook so that the band would be bigger, but the cups would fit.

                        The girl was really nice.

Is your store just lingere or is it sleepwear too? And what about bathing suits?

Now see, I would appreciate that kind of help. I always end up with some woman in the 50-70 yr old range who wants to walk right into the fitting room with me, so I've stopped allowing them to help me at all.
