Sorry but you have that same chance of the food being bad in a normal can. Or it being recalled so on.

Dented cans are pulled off the shelves because customers won't buy them. The food inside is still perfectly edible (assuming the can isn't punctured), but because the can is no longer pretty, customers won't buy it, and thus it will sit on the shelf forever. Its purely a cosmetic issue caused by picky customers who want everything to be absolutely pristine.
Except that as has been pointed out already it used to be indicative of something that could have been a major concern. Just like ,for instance, "wait 30 minutes or an hour after eating to go into water". Our parents and grandparents were raised with this being TRUTH. They pass on what was true for them to us, and quite honestly their marketing campaign is better than the "pro dents" lobby.

Not everything that our family warned us about is truth though. Example Poinsettias being deadly if we consume a leaf from the plant.

No there are others that go to the discount cart first then shop for their goods.

Very little that was thought of as "truth" by "old wives tales" continues to be. Swimming after eating is okay as long as it wasn't too heavy a meal and you aren't swimming in the ocean or a river, as one example, dented cans being deadly, being inadequately clothed causing you to catch a cold as a couple more, but people still pass them along.

Perhaps though it is better to say that these statements are "unfactual" because they are still perceived and acted upon as true by a significant number of people for whom grandma's truthiness trumps the actual facts of the matter.

                "You'll catch cold!" ... no.

"You'll get hypothermia!" ... more accurate.

But you can see how the one can be chinese-whispered to the other.

Ahh, dented cans... to me, they equal bargainous goldmine. Dented cans tend to end up in the staff shop for silly little prices, like 15p or less; which is where I get them from. I'm budgeting, so as far as I'm concerned, bargain can with dents wins against full price can without dents.
