  • LPG/natural gas/propane shortage

So there's a shortage of LPG/natural gas/propane/whatever you call it in your part of the world (here we call it "LPG" or just "gas", also "propane" is incorrect because it's usually a mixture of propane and butane). Here's just one article about the problem:
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...htm?site=local

And like all other service stations in town, my workplace has been affected. We didn't get the contaminated gas but did get four times the usual gas business when the ones who were contaminated closed down. Then, like everybody else in town, we ran out of gas and the suppliers just can't keep up with demand. Thursday last week (not yesterday) we were told to expect a delivery on Friday morning. Friday afternoon we were told Tuesday morning. Tuesday afternoon we were told "sometime soon". Wednesday a gas tanker arrived but only to use the truck wash.

Anyway this has resulted in many SCs...

-three (that I've seen) have attempted to pump gas despite the "NO GAS" signs on the gas pumps. One said he heard we have a secret supply just for taxi drivers (99% of the taxis in town run on gas).

-many claims that "it said on the radio/your website/in the paper that you have some", followed by an inability to believe that the people who actually work in the store may have more accurate information on the topic (also it turns out "our website" is nothing to do with us, it's a site that lists prices at various service stations and is usually wrong.)

-One death threat, which was swiftly dealt with since it was made in front of a plainclothes detective who came in to wash his car. (the guy got let off with a warning, but if anything happens to my co-worker who was working at the time he'll be the first one they talk to)

To their credit, three people have called while I was working, politely asked if we had gas, and accepted "no" for an answer.

*/nitpick, there is a difference between natural gas and propane... natural gas is naturally occuring and propane is a byproduct of crude refining */end nitpick

but oh I can imagine your pain, living down the street from a 7-11 that I frequent and seeing all the SCs they had to deal with when they had to do repairs on their tanks... and in that case, unlike yours where it is a city wide thing, there are 3 other (at the time, there are now 4) gas stations withint 3 blocks of that 7-11, 2 of which were a lower price anyway...

      Hello to another Aussie person!!

Yeah, I heard about this. I have a LOT of respect for petrol station attendees because they have to put up with more sucky customers than we do!

Which doesn't stop people referring to natural gas as propane or vice versa.

When I got to work this morning we had gas! Over the last couple of weeks some people have fallen into the habit of asking when we'll have gas again, it was amusing to give the answer "now".

It's gamerspeak - a misspelling of "Owned". It's used of someone who gets very soundly beaten.

Related is the hacker-speak version, "0wned".

Well the shortage has just hit barbecue gas supplies (since gas for barbecues and for cars is the same stuff). So many people get angry because we can't fill their gas bottles that they didn't check before they started cooking.
