  • 19 Year Old Punk Beats Up Our LP!

Okay.... I just wanted to say punk, I'll be honest, I'm only 20 myself. And he didn't beat up our LP guy, just...well, punched him. Basically as I was walking up today I saw a couple officers arresting this guy outside our store, and a whole bunch of my coworkers standing around. Apparently this kid had been watched buy our super awesome LP guy the entire time he was in the store, and when LP went to bust him at the door, the kid threw a punch at him and tried to beat him up!

Now our LP guy isn't like...bouncer sized, but he's a big guy, obviously works out (and very cute, I might add). He can take a punch, but was having a hard time getting this kid off him, so an older customer hopped in and held the customer until the cops got there. Which is nice because I'm not sure if we would have been able to detain him.

What was so precious to this guy, what was he willing to fight over?

4 halloween wigs. Coming to a grand total of 21.67$.

What is he getting for all this? At the very least, two lovly charges of theft and assault!

It always was the lower amounts that gave me the most trouble when I did LP, bizarre really.

Doesn't the physical violence/assault turn it into robery or am I thinking of it needing to involve a weapon or threat of a weapon. And thank goodness for the customer for pulling the shit bag off the LP guy.

The people who go for the big stuff are probably better at it.

Thief? *knows Garrett, but can't really give more description, other than Eidos...*

I was about to respond to the OP that I wasn't sure about the legality of detaining said suspect, and then I realized it was the other customer who did, and that's more like Good Samaritanism...

Not sure about where the OP is from but the police here have told me I can do whatever I need to do to stop and detain a shoplifter.

Infact the one officer told me that the local supermarket has chased shoplifters down the road and when they caught them they have beat the crap out of them to subdue them until the police arrived.

Here's a tip for our brilliant criminal mind: you're supposed to get a disguse BEFORE you enter the store.

I know! I know! It's Garrett from "The Bard's Tale"! The one InXile Studios did a few years ago, I think....can I has my cookies now?

Our LP guy is awesome, but he is really nasty. If he busts someone, they get permabanned. If they set foot in the store, they get a visit from LP guy, who may or may not get backup from the RCMP. And then they spend the night in a nice cold concrete bed.

Sorry to your LP guy. It's dumb having your face punched, but it's great knowing that there are good people who don't mind jumping in to help those in need.

I always heard different stories at different employers.

At the grocery store, report any and every theft you witness to management right away, and hope LP can get there in time.

At the Deb shop, you have to be sure without a doubt that they stole something, tell the manager, and hope the manager gets to them on time.

At the gas station....let them take whatever they want and don't fight back.

Exactly, I'm not sure if there is a general state or city or county "law" on it, but I know that for my employer, we are not allowed to detain the customer ourselves, however I'm not sure if its different for our LP/salaried managment when they have positive proof.

On the other hand, us lowly employees absolutly cannot do anything about shoplifting, and even if we report it to management, they have to see it themselves before they can do anything.

And yes, lol, for clarity, it was the customer who held the shoplifter, not an employee . We gave him a 25$ giftcard, what a prize!

I work at the same company as you Enigma

hourlies such as our selves can't touch shoplifters, we're not trained in how to do it safely, and people do some crazy things. we can look inside, but if someone tries to come through our register with tote full of food and we see it, then they threaten resistence to us taking it back we're supposed to just let them take it, then obviously let a CSM/support/assistant manager know so they can investigate it. APAs and salaried management are allowed to forcibly detain people, as APAs have a 3 week training course at wherever the district manager is, and salaried managers have their training course, which is, I think 12 weeks. One guy got into a fight with an APA much like the one you described, an assistant manager, and a co manager. The APA suplexed him .

I've seen the store manager chasing people several times, he does more to stop shoplifting than the APC does.

I have a copy of the APA job description, I'll highlight it with my favorite parts:

Detain shoplifters, when appropriate, within company guidelines

ability to defend oneself, and others, as needed

Routinely coming into contact with or taking control of any item in the facility, including potentially hazardous chemicals, flowers, plants, animals, food, fine particulate matter(READ:drugs), sharp instruments, and weapons
