  • Wherein a robbery yeilded a net gain...

    Yay! My first 'wherein' post

THis one was relayed to me by a close personal friend whom I have helped a time or 2 at the store.

<BS> Friend owns a small marina / general store in a fairly remote location. For the purpose of this story, they leave an extremely limited supply of cash after 5:00 pm basically a $25 float. $15 is usually all that is in the till as far as paper money. </BS>

So the time is 8:20 and nice and dark, a rather grubby individual enters the store. Being in a remote area, my friend did not really know what to look for in order to define a suspicious character. Grubby Guy, herein GG, is fidgety, and restless as the clerk is dealing with a current customer. Once the customer leaves, my friend asks if he can help GG. GG then asks to change a $20, which he sets down on the counter, to be able to use the phone. Friend was about to inform the guy of the limited float, and perhaps lend GG a quarter to use the phone, but just as the till is opened to demonstrate lack of funds, GG then pulls out a knife, and demands the contents of the till.

So friend hands the guy the $15 in the till, and GG takes off like a bat out of hell, out the store and down the highway. GG left the $20 on the counter. So now the store got paid $5 to be robbed. Police did not show up for 2 days because they thought the person reporting the crime was playing a joke, as they were laughing hysterically during the report to 911. When Police finally showed up, they were able to determine who it was as they had someone in custody that had the same MO and matched descriptions, however we were the first and only place that the guy forgot his $20 bait.

Somedays being in Customer Service just plain rocks!

It's a scene from Stupid Criminals Caught On Tape!

Seriously, I saw this on TV years ago.

Even if it is, it's still funny . . .definitely one for the books.

Srsly??? They had no security cam, so I would love to see something like this in action. I never thought criminals could be THAT stupid.

They can be. The worst part is it's more common then you would think!

They wouldn't need to steal if they were smart.

And if they are smart criminals they don't steal no 20$!

This is the most wonderful story I've read. Stupid crook+careless=comedy gold.

actually not a bad idea... if all you have is $15, what better way to discourage someone from robbing you than by showing them it's not worth it... besides, if someone really wants to rob you it doesn't matter if the til is open or not.

the till was opened for a non customer that was not robbing them but just wanted change ,
as a mini mart cashier I would definitely turn over the cash in a robbery but I never open the till for change ,if you need change you have to buy something

what's wrong with showing someone you have $15? I open the self check drawer for change, but it has so little money that they don't even pull it in the midday pull, unless the person there says they need to, which is only when a self check terminal is no cash

The reason is for safety. Additionally, I wouldn't want someone invading my space by leaning over to see how much was in my drawer. I work in a big department/grocery store and it's very unlikely someone would try to rob me in a stick-em-up fashion. If my drawer is already open and someone wants say a roll of quarters, I can point to the open till and explain I don't have enough change. But in an out-of-the-way convenience store where I'm alone to fend for myself? No way. Really. Nope.

Yeah, this situation is funny, but I'm very relieved the employee didn't end up hurt. Opening the till acts as an invitation and makes it easier for someone to go beyond thinking about robbing you to the actual robbing part.

or possibly they know what's in the drawer at busier stores and think this drawer is close to that? it's more likely than being willing to get a robbery charge for $15

One Stupid Criminal story I read recently told of a robbery where the fellow waved a gun around and told the casher to step back from the register...

Then ran off with the adding machine, leaving the register behind.
