Hi guys, I'm back for good! Got my Internet up and running! Woo!
OK, so picture the scene, it is a VERY busy night, understaffed, and everyone is annoyed. And then this happens.
Water starts pouring through the ceiling. It starts gushing out of light fixtures, and seconds later, it trips the fire alarm.
I say picture it because I was not present when this happened, but that's the story. The bar had to be evacuated, and no one had any idea where this water had come from and there were A LOT of pissed off customers.
The next day, we opened as normal. The floor was a little water damaged, but mostly Ok. We found out what happened. The hotel next door to us water tank leaked. The force of the water crashed through six of their rooms (unoccupied thank fuck) and then headed for us. We are seperate from the hotel, but three floors of them are above us, so guess where the rest of the water headed. That's right, through the ventilation system and into us.
An engineer (courtesey of the hotel) came and checked us out. He said we were fine, the lights would just need replacing. He checked the ceiling...all OK.
So, I spent the day dealing with dozens of SC's, each coming in demanding money because the bar got closed the night before, and they were evacuated before they could finish their drinks. Wasn't pleasent.
Two days later...
I walk into the bar. I am opening up. All I hear is drip drip drip At first I thought it was something simple like someone leaving a tap running. I walk around the corner...
The portion of the ceiling where the water came through was GONE. Completely caved in. About a THIRD of the bar was COVERED in a mess of plaster, concrete and electrical wiring. The cigarette machine was DESTROYED and our ATM was buried.
First thing I did was turn off all the electricity. Then I marched over to the hotel, demanding an explanation. The hotel manager said there had been another problem overnight with the water tank, and they were waiting for someone from our bar to turn up. I informed her that our roof was gone and took her over.
She must have thought I was exaggerating, because when I took her over, her jaw hit the floor and she dropped her mug of coffee.
I checked out the security camera footage. It happened FIVE MINUTES after the evening staff went home. Thank fuck none of them were in.
Of course we didn't open. Cue A LOT of pissed off customers trying to get in, most of them hotel guests who had already experience the calamity two nights earlier.
All the managers came in, and we got an emergency crew out. A structural engineer took a look, and said there was no danger of anything else caving in on us. It was just the shell of the ceiling that had given way. We were given the OK to open, provided we sectioned off the affected area of the bar (remember I said a THIRD of it was gone!)
So, two days later, after a massive cleaning session (staff who were supposed to be working came in to help out) we reopened.
The hotel is SERIOUSLY out of money. They have three floors worth of damage to pay for, and then pay for ours.
Where's the SC in this story?
Well, a lady came into the bar, and after seeing our pulverised cigarette machine said:
SC: This is fucking ridiculous! I demand you get me some cigarettes from that machine!
They were covered in debris and plaster...well, if she's smoking I don't think it makes much difference!
