  • Run! Before she comes back!

It was LITERALLY one minute before my shift ended. I was counting down the seconds. And then SHE came along.

She was not sucky, just needy and irritating.

Me: Hi there, what can I get you?
SC: My friend has special requirements!
    Me: Ok...
SC: She can't eat ANYTHING with fat. She can't eat anything that has been fried, grilled, battered, has come into any contact with foreign substances, can't have anything that has been near oil or grease or cooked in an oven that has had other items of food in, and she cannot have ANY kind of dressing.

She seriously said that, without taking a breath.

    Me: Okkk..
SC: So what can she eat?

After TEN MINUTES, we found a suitable meal. A slice of plain chicken breast and a side salad with no dressing (I had to take A LOT off the meal to make it suitable)

Me: So I think that's that sorted. Anything else?
    SC: Yes, drinks!

After preparing her drinks, I headed into the kitchen to inform them of the customers needs. It was now TWENTY minutes after I was supposed to go home. I walked out of the kitchen, and SHE was there.

SC: Actually, I want to completely change the order if it's not too late!

So we went through it all again!

Half an hour after I was supposed to go home, she was satisfied.

Me: So I take it your friend has an allergy of some kind?
SC: No. She just can't stand anything greasey!
    Me: :O

After that, I ran for my coat. I was going home. As I left, she was walking towards me again! I pretended I didn't see her and power walked for the door, faintly hearing:

    SC: Uhhh...uhhh...excuse me...

    I almost walked into traffic.

I read once that in Japan, making excessive special requests in the preparation of your food at a restaurant is grounds for being asked to leave, as it not just rude, but insulting to the chef. Frankly, that should be justification to throw out someone from ANY restaurant, anywhere.

Honestly, it's one thing if you have an allergy and need a specific ingredient omitted or changed, but if you don't like the food somewhere, then for Pete's sake don't eat there. Restaurants have menus for a reason, and it isn't so you can create your own custom dishes that aren't on it.

It wasn't so much her special requests, it was the fact that I was so looking forward to going home and she then proceeded to go after me when it was so obvious I was leaving.

You should have told her that "I'm done for the day" & booked it out of there like a bat out of hell.

I just don't get why this friend couldn't speak up for herself, if she wanted her food so specifically prepared. And honestly? If you have that many demands about how your food is prepared, you probably should just eat at home instead.

I agree about telling the customer that the work day was over and handing it off to someone else, though. She'll probably expect more like that in the future.

So, you're eating at a bar why? In fact, how do you manage to eat anywhere but at teh Farmer's Market?

And yet, it seems like the better of the two choices.

According to CS Lewis in The Screwtape Letters, it's also a form of gluttony. I can't remember the exact argument, but it had to do with not being appreciative of what you were offered and making people go out of thier way to please you.
