  • To all customers... This is how a propane tank exchange is supposed to work!

Yesterday I had a guy come in and want to do 2 propane tank exchanges. He did not have his empty tanks with him when he walked in. He proceeds to pay for them and I give him his receipt.
SC: Ok, I'd like my propane tanks now.
Me: I'm sorry, sir. But I need to collect the empty tanks from you before I can give you the full ones.
Of course, the dumbass gives me a look
Me: Its store policy, sir. I'm sorry.
He didn't get mad, but he did act like it was such an inconvenience to walk out to his truck and get his empty tanks.
SC: Fine. Its not like I'm going to rip you guys off or anything!
Um, ok? And how the hell am I supposed to know that you won't take your 2 full tanks, put them in your truck, and drive away? I've learned not to trust any customer when it comes to this, because they could be trying to rip us off for all I know. And I am not going to take a chance and have my manager or supervisor pull me aside and chastise me for not collecting the empty tanks like I was supposed to.
He comes back in carrying his empty tanks and drops them down on the ground angrily. I try to be nice and apologize (which never works of course but I have to do it anyway to avoid him saying I was rude). His response was "Yeah, whatever." and left. I forwarned a manager about the situation in case he compains just to cover my own ass. Wanna bet that he does complain?
This is the 2nd time (not at this job) that I've had someone act as if I were accusing them of stealing, ripping us off, etc, when I didn't. What is with these stupid people?! I am just doing my job, and I'm not about to get into trouble for not collecting the empty tanks like I'm supposed to when doing propane tanks exchanges. It makes me so mad when they do this because they go and complain on me when I didn't do anything wrong! God, I fucking hate these types!

Last year our store started propane exchange. It drives me crazy when they bring their empty bottles into the store which is a big safety risk. They always say 'but the tanks empty'. But It still has fumes or a little bit of gas left in it dumbass! I dont want to take the chance of something bad happening just because your too lazy to go back to your vehicle to get your tank.

sorry for hijacking your thread like that..

Guy doesn't know what "exchange" means does he? Exchange-The act of giving or taking one thing in return for another.(from Miriam-Webster's New World dictionary)

People do that all the time! And the worst, they'll have it on the ground where I can't see it, and lift it up and I have to be like, "Sir, that cannot be in the store!", and they usually just give you a surprised look.

When I was still new, a manager had a little exchange with a customer about it, the customer refused to leave at first, before the manager nearly forced him outside.

          Hello, safety hazard.

A few years ago, when we were under the old management regime and thus trying to be all things to all people, we did propane exchanges.

We didn't get a whole lot of business out of that. Plus we also had the doofuses bringing their not-quite empty tanks into the store.

Walmart stocks full, small size ones in their camping equipment area. Not as big as the white refillable ones, but they usually have dozens of them. Same gas, different shaped bottle. Really, they are safe, thick metal containers. When they are empty, they don't have nearly any pressure remaining. The risk is

Besides, it's the full ones you leave sitting outside in a little cage where an angry customer could get to them, or Granny could smash into them when she drives up on the curb.

Yeah, but it only takes one time someone brings in a half-full bottle with a busted valve, and then everything goes sideways. One. Time. The risk might be small, but when the alternative to enforcing it is possible death, then how about no.

Did I read this right? The SC slammed the tanks on the ground?! Was there damage, if so, I sure hope that piece of work gets charged for it.

I've seen that myself a few times, despite the signs on the door that say not to do that.

Better yet, I once saw some idiot bring a tank inside the store, while smoking a cigarette!

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: If some idiot wants to blow himself up, more power to him. But don't blow the rest of us up in the process.

I don't think I would have thought twice about bringing the tank inside to get the guy to swap one out.

Obviously I wouldnt be an SC about it if i did get told to put it outside.

But now I know for sure.

And admittedly, I might not have either.

But I'd like to think that the difference between us and the idiots that we're ranting about is that if there was a sign saying not to do it, we'd listen.

At the marina I was working at, I caught a guy in our parking lot using an old propane tank to hold up his boat on a trailer as he replaced a wheel. I have no clue how he got it under there, (Seriously if he used a jack, why would he wedge a propane tank in its place) and the entire boat/trailer combo was just leaning way to far from center. I ask the guy what was up and he tells me his tire is low. Now we have air on site and there were numerous better ways to handle this....like say telling me, putting his boat in the water as he was planing to anyway and having me use the proper tools while he was out on the river. Hell, I wouldn't have even charged the guy as I have to do this kind of stuff all the time. In the end, I had to pretty much unfuck this guys trailer as he couldn't get the wheel back on. Every time he tried to push the wheel into place, the entire boat and trailer would lean over, threatening to flip. By the time I got the trailer on a proper jack and filled the tire up, I noticed he had stripped the threads on his axle, basically making his boat trailer a death trap(I couldn't get any of the nuts to stay in place meaning one good right turn, and the wheel goes flying). Ended up having to leave his boat and trailer at the marina for us to fix. The guy's attitude wasn't too bad considering he just made a costly mistake. Don't assume people aren't stupid...you'll constantly be surprised otherwise.

That story about the boat trailer... wow. I know some people are not mechanically inclined, but just how bad do you have to you be at it to strip the threads on all of your wheel bolts while getting it off?
