  • Why yes we do accept currency (long)

This is actually an old story, but I feel inclined to share it with you... Because I don't want to recount tonight while its still fresh.

Before I moved to closing I used to open, the main reason of which was because my wife worked opens and knows how to tell me stuff so it sticks.

Anyway it used to be about once a week that our credit machines would go down, this was nothing new or even remotely interesting, no jiggling of the cord or turning it off and on would fix it, but come four hours later it worked like a dream... *sigh*

Maniacal laughing aside we would have to inform the customers of this before they ordered, or we would have to give the food to them for free, it they are cool people I got no issues with this but when they step all over me just to get there allegedly mexican inspired food, even when the wait is going to be fifteen minutes... long statement cut mildly shorter if I hate you, you no gets free food.

So one of two things will happen on these types of days.

Me: Hello, hows it going today? Feel welcome to look over the menu and order when you're ready. Before you do however I need to tell you we can not, currently, accept cards.
SC: Oh, it that credit cards too or is it just debit?
    OR
SC: Do you accept cash then?
listen people for whatever godforsaken reason we still accept checks, its posted, of course we accept cash.

or they will get to the window after having stepped all over me to order and when I ask for denomination I get a card and tell them we can't accept them
Sc: You never told me that how I am I supposed to know that?
Me: It was actually said during that part of my greeting where I said we couldn't accept cards, but I think you were two busy ordering to hear me, either way if you can't pay I'm going to have to ask you to drive on please.

I hate those responses because it's usually a passive-aggressive comment because you haven't done what they think you should. In the name of good customer service, of course .

Customer: Why can't I use my credit/debit card?

    Me: because it's been declined/the system's down/the machine can't read it/the power's out...etc.

Customer: You still take cash, I suppose, don't you?

Did the customer say that in a snotty or sucky tone? I ask because I have been known to brain fart and it sounds like something I may say

granted, I'm coming from a different background... but I wouldn't think it unreasonable of one of my guests to ask if we accept cash... sense (most) everyone knows you need a credit card to reserve a room (or car if talking about before I got into the hotel industry) a lot of people could easily assume that you also need a card to pay for the room(car).
Then again, I've never heard of a restaurant not accepting cash so they are still stupid in that case.

Strangely quite a few of the people who would ask that would ask it as if genuinely wanted to know... The passive aggressive one is one of my favorites, and get the response "Pull around to the second window please." When we only have one... this is always worth a chuckle.

It might save you some headaches if you ask them first how they plan to pay for it and tell them about the card machine problem only if they plan on using one.

This sounds like doom waiting to happen. If they aren't listening when you tell them it's down, they still aren't paying attention enough to know you were asking a question.

And of the customers who were previously not a problem as they listened to you, you will find some of them turn rotten with things like:

"Why do YOU need to know?"
                  "What's it to you?"
"How the hell does that matter?"

And the like. Then you can tell them blah blah and they'll probably be ok with it. But you just wasted time and risk over-reaction.

At my work all the time the debit goes down but the credit cards still work. We deal with a separate company for our credit services.

There is a town in Ontario that the whole town does not take cash, you can go to the bank or the tourist booth and get a in town only debit card.

Seriously? In Ontario? That's...crap, that's weird. I'll bet that creates LOTS of sucky, unhappy visitors.

Which town? I only ask so's I can avoid stopping there should I ever be brain-dead enough to drive through ON.

sweet, I hate having cash... the only time I use cash is for small businesses that I know are in hard times and don't need the extra expense of credit card merchant fees, places that give discounts for cash, and small purchases (ie $1-2).

I must visit this town and see how well it works.

I once went into the grocery store to get a few things, and had no cash on me. I saw a sign saying "Our Debit Card machines are down" Cool I said, I'm using credit anyway.

Then I had to run to the ATM while the nice cashier held my order because they weren't accepting credit either.

Then as I was leaving I re read the sign...

Still don't know how I missed that.
