Got some drug stories for ya!
Never heard of this one before
I got this one the other day.
The listing starts to load in my program, I noticed it was flagged under one of the "drug" policies. Oh goody... I hate those, way too much stuff in those policies and can be rather confusing. Most of what I see get flagged is either pot or prescription/non-prescription stuff. Not this one! Our crappy program finally loads the actual listing for me to review. I'm greeted by not a brand name or slang term, but a chemical name... one that I've never heard of before!
So I start looking it up on various government sites to find out if it's a restricted chemical. Yup! It certainly is! I won't say exactly what it was for various reasons, but it's described as "a powerful psychedelic drug".
In case you were wondering, yes, they were selling the ACTUAL drugs! They were listing it as being "for research only" and shipping it from China to the US (which brings up a whole new mess of issues).
This is one of those things that will get you an immediate, PERMANENT suspension AND a guaranteed call to law enforcement!
So I send it to a supervisor to get approval to suspend and so they can start notifying the right people. While I'm waiting, a coworker reads the "for research only" part and the following conversation happens:
CW: "For research only??? What sick fuck would give that shit to an animal???"
Me: "I don't know, but if they do, I hope they get bitten to death!"
Then I get the note back from the supervisor: "Do NOT take any action!"
I then find out why: they got an email shortly before I got the listing saying that they are already being investigated by law enforcement and not to take action until they're done. Can we say "BUSTED!!!"?
Seriously, why do people think they can get away with selling illegal drugs on the site? I'm pretty sure that multiple government agencies are constantly monitoring the site for stuff like this.
Perhaps they shouldn't be sampling their product...
Ecstacy
Yup, someone was trying to sell 200 pills of ecstacy on the site. They even had pictures of all the pills and went on to describe how they were "the quality stuff, not the cheap stuff". I got this one a couple years ago. This is another one that had notes all over it saying "do not touch, law enforcement is involved". I heard later that they not only busted the seller, but the buyers as well!
The account takeover
I got this one when I worked in the account security department. Guy comes in to chat trying to figure out why his listings were removed for selling drugs, all he ever listed was model trains! So I look at his account and there was the removal for the drug policy. I pull it up to see what it was - a potted pot plant! It even had a nice description about how it was lovingly grown from the finest seeds! Lucky for this guy (in a way), there was enough evidence showing that he was telling the truth - someone had guessed his password and changed one of his listings from a model train to the plant. After giving him quite the lecture about account security and passwords, I sent him on his way and noted his account.
NOT an account takeover
This happened within a week of the last one. He comes into chat saying someone stole his account and listed some "stuff"... this "stuff" turned out to be several bags/bricks of processed pot (don't remember how many kilos). This wasn't for personal use, this was for distribution/sales. The listings had already been ended early by the seller.
Unlike the other guy, there was no signs of unauthorized use of the account. It didn't help his case that while we were doing our standard verification to make sure he was actually the account owner he decided to change his story. Now it was his "kid brother" that got into his account and listed it as a joke.
When I say "no signs of unauthorized use", he came into the chat using the SAME COMPUTER that listed the drugs... and there was no indication that ANYONE other than him had accessed the account. He didn't even bother to change his password. (Which would be the first thing I'd do after punishing said sibling.)
We suspect that what REALLY happened was a couple days after he listed the drugs, one of his few remaining brain cells sparked to life and said "Oh shit! What have I done? I'm going to get busted for this!" an then tried to (unsuccessfully) cover his ass.
By this time, there was even a note on the account saying not to do anything because law enforcement was involved.
So we basically said "Sorry, kid brothers are not considered account takeovers, change your passwords and don't let him near your computer ever again!"
And then we all laughed at how busted his drug dealing ass was. If he hadn't been caught before, he sure was now that he contacted us and told us about the drugs that were listed on his account.
