  • I feel pretty now.

This happened sometime ago. At my hotel we have Mary Kay ladies come in for meetings about every other month and I was working with a co-worker. After one of their meetings one of them came up to the desk,

    MK: Mary Kay lady
    CW: Co-worker
    Me: Me

MK: (to co-worker) You are very pretty. Have you considered doing any modeling?

    CW: Ummmmm no

MK: Well you would be perfect to be a model for this new line of Mary Kay
product. I will give you my card and we can set up an appointment.

MK: (looking at me) Well I guess I should give you a card to huh I don't want you to have a complex or anything. (puts a card on the counter next to me)

    Me: What ever you want

MK: We could give you a make over or something you know fix you up.

    CW:

    Me: Whatever

After that she left. Now I know I am not much to look at but I don't think I need someone with 3 inches of make up on to "fix me up"

I'm not saying you aren't pretty enought to model. I have never seen you. Maybe you are. However, those bitches will say anything to sell a damn lipstick.

I had one of them find out I used to sell Avon and try to get me sell MK for her. The line of BS she used was "Well, I'm moving to another town and don't want to leave my customers without a rep. So you'd take over my customer base."

Except that she was no more moving to another town than I was.

I swear, I dont' know what is up with those women.

RK, I think the point was that the lady told her co-worker who was standing next to her that she should model, and THEN looked at Hellzar, kind of down her nose, and was all "Well I guess I should give you my card too so you don't feel left out." In other words, implying that she's ugly and therefore insecure. And the " I could give you a makeover and fix you up" was just adding insult to injury.

My best friend is a very voluptuous girl, and I am much thinner. We've actually had people come up to us and do very similar things, implying that she's ugly or fat, and I am not. They tend to get really freaked when I'm the one that gets mad. She just sits back and smirks while I go off on them.
Because as we all know, on the Internet all men are men, all women are men and all children are FBI agents.

I was involved (very BRIEFLY) in the Mary Kay cult. And they will say ANYTHING to get you to buy their overpriced products. Don't get me wrong.....it is very high quality makeup and skincare product....but those prices are just ridiculous.

Did I already mention that they will say ANYTHING to get you in? That's how they hooked me.

I was cashiering at the grocery store, and a lady said "You're very pretty and I like how you do your makeup. You should come to *hotel* next Tuesday and be a facial model for me." I did. It's not even that big of a deal. You're just their guinea pig to put makeup on and show off to everyone else.

Then she started on the "If you'd like a job with more money...." and.....you can guess where it went from there.

Don't feel too bad. It's a cult, it truly is. I'd rather sell Avon. At least you can say no to an Avon lady and they don't keep bugging you or act like you kicked their kid.

True, and that was pretty crappy of her. But I'm willing to bet that trying to tweak her "insecurity" was ALSO a ploy to sell a damn lipstick.

It is a cult. I made the mistake when I was younger of getting sucked into being a face model. Them makeup broke out my skin, and those women were VERY scary. The video that they had to watch was very frightening.

Yea I knew what she was up to so I did not pay her any mind but it upset my co-worker mainly because she thought that I would be nasty to her because of this.

besides, you *don't* need MK or even Avon to get into modeling.

Personally, in my opinion if it's something you're really interested in check out www.modelmayhem.com (kinda like MySpace for models, makeup artists, photographers).

But... just giving someone a card so they feel left out is rude. There's better ways to do that. Like handing out both cards together from the start (without any "left out" comments... Or (even better) stick to just handing out one card.

Again in my opinion... it's not unusual for the second person to *not* be offended that their friend or co-worker got a modeling offer. Cos if it's someone you really like, you'd be happy for them - assuming the friend/cw wants the offer - instead of grumbling "why not me too?"

MK: We could give you a make over or something you know fix you up.
and it sounds like they just lost your co-worker's respect... and probably won't be getting a new model

You don't need MK or Avon to get into modeling because modeling is not their business. Their business is hawking paint and possibly doing a little pyramid scheming. I'm pretty sure the modeling bullshit is somethng they are trained to say (MK, I mean, not Avon. I have no grievance with Avon.). Idiot MK rep tried it on me (the same one who also tried to get me to sell it.) They know dick all about modeling. It's a total scam.

There's a bit more to modeling than buying some overpriced eyeshadow from some lying pyramid schemer.

Personally I find MK products not only overpriced but a bit harsh on my skin. A couple of years ago, I tried their skin cleansing products (facial cleaner and moisturizer) and my skin just didn't agree with it to the point where I was getting more flaky around my nose area.

Needless to say that was the extent of my one and only experience with that particular line of products. I'll stick with the ones I can easily get at the local WM or drugstore - either L'Oreal, Oil of Old Lady (Olay) or St. Ives.

Besides, I'd buy Avon first before that overpriced stuff . . . at least Avon's prices are more reasonable (and I can simply pick up an order at the beauty shop, as one of the ladies there sells it on the side.)

It might also be a kind of backhanded compliment Hellzar -

MK "hmmm... gotta hand out one more card today. There's two girls, but the one looks WAY too clever... I'll give my card to the other one."

It's not really actual modeling. It's like I said before, you're just a person for them to put makeup on in front of all the other Mary Kay ladies, and then afterwards, they try to force you to buy all that makeup that they put on you, and all that skincare product they used on you before the makeup.

It'd be just like me saying "Hey let's go out this weekend....come over early and I'll do your makeup for you in front of the other girls."

I was just looking at an Avon magazine on my lunch break last night, and some of the special prices were amazing. I had to resist the urge.......lipsticks for under $5.....press on eyeshadow.....and this face protecting serum that prevents shine and oil for only $10.....ohhh it's hard.

I've found the same to be true. Oil of Olay and St. Ives are the only cleansing/moisturizing products I'll use. They're reasonably priced and they work much better for me than that expensive stuff.
